| We are people on a Mission…
a mission that is formed by the very vision that God has for the work of
the church on earth. At our Synod Assembly in 2001 Bishop Kevin Kanouse
pointed us toward this vision and identified Claiming the Great
Mission Commission as the focal point of our synod’s life and
work. A year later our keynote speaker, Pastor Michael Foss of
Burnsville, Minnesota, spoke to the urgency of this mission and called
on us to practice the marks of discipleship. The assembly responded by
calling for a Year of Prayer and Conversation throughout the
synod on our common mission and our call to discipleship.
At the Synod Assembly of 2003 the
congregations of the synod will be challenged to move from reflection to
action. Congregations will be given both the encouragement and the tools
to begin to think through how they can shape their missional efforts.
The theme is The Shaping of Mission. Before departing, voting
members and rostered leaders will be asked to covenant together about
specific and deliberate steps that they can undertake upon their return
to the congregation that will lead the congregation into greater
mission.
