Bible Study Leader,
The Rev. Dr. Richard Nelson, has been the W. J.
A. Power Professor of Biblical Hebrew and Old Testament at Perkins School of
Theology since 2001. Previously he served as pastor of Good Shepherd
Lutheran Church, Pittsburgh (1974-77), then taught at Ferrum College in
Virginia (1977-81) and Gettysburg Lutheran Seminary in Pennsylvania
(1981-2001). He participated in the Tel Gezer excavation in Israel (1971) and a
National Endowment for the Humanities summer seminar at Yale University
(1980). He has been a visiting scholar at the Catholic University of Louvain,
Belgium (1991) and Princeton Theological Seminary (1999).He is the author of seven books and numerous articles on Biblical
themes. His books include First and Second Kings (John Knox, 1987); Raising Up A Faithful Priest
(Westminster John Knox, 1993); Joshua: A Commentary (Westminster John Knox, 1997); The
Historical Books (Abingdon, 1998); Deuteronomy: A Commentary (Westminster John Knox, 2002), and
From Eden to Babel: An Adventure in Bible Study (Chalice Press, 2006). He has written three adult
Bible study series for Augsburg Fortress Press.
Professor Nelson is an ordained pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and rostered
in the NT-NL Synod. His wife Karen teaches Developmental Reading at
Richland Community College in Dallas. They have four adult children. |
