On the first day of our Evangelical Lutheran Church in America assembly the gathered assembly approved the creation of a Commission for a New Lutheran Church. This CNLC will study our church’s expressions, structure, and purpose and bring a report and plan to our 2025 Churchwide assembly. That assembly will then be empowered to call for a re-constituting convention to address the work of the CNLC.
This is a ground breaking moment in the ELCA that is the result of memorials from 13 synods including the NT-NL Synod, ELCA. At our assembly we memorialized the churchwide assembly to take this action. After deliberation this memorial was overwhelmingly adopted and a new CNLC will be established by the ELCA Church Council.
As the NT-NL synod sent this memorial to the #CWA2022 I can say that I am pleased by this action. It is forward looking and adaptive in recognizing the structure of our church much change to help us to adapt to current and future realities and help us, most critically, in our mission to proclaim Christ crucified and risen, to serve our neighbors, and be faithful stewards of God’s creation. #NTNL #InMissionTogether
