SUMMARY:White Supremacy & Racism: Facing Reality\, Taking Responsibility
DESCRIPTION:A Study Group Co-Sponsored by Briarwood Leadership Center and the Public Witness Team of the Northern Texas-Northern Louisiana Synod\, ELCA \nAmerican forms of racism shape our life together in ELCA congregations. White supremacy distorts our proclamation of the Gospel\, limiting the possibilities of evangelism. Lay and rostered congregational leaders interested in facing these realities are invited to join this study group co-organized by Briarwood Leadership Center and the Public Witness Team of NT-NL Synod. \nWith an eye toward taking meaningful action\, we will work through some of the most incisive analytical studies of racism. We will focus on structural realities rather than individual attitudes or personal experience. Equipped by this intensive study\, the group will decide what actions they will take in their own congregations and which actions will be recommended to the NT-NL Synod as a whole. \nLed by Emma Rodgers (St. John\, Dallas) and Robert Smith (Briarwood Leadership Center)\, the course will feature several outside guest speakers with expertise in the topics and particular authors. The proposed agenda is listed below. All readings will be provided in electronic format\, with encouragement toward additional resources. \nSessions are on Tuesday evenings\, biweekly\, 7-8:30pm. Pre-registration is required in order to receive the Zoom link. All participants are strongly encouraged to complete the assigned reading prior to participating in a session. \nRegister here: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZwvf-Cvpz8tGNOiuDyWHhZGAguSPKrdNp3X. After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. \nMay 11\nIntroduction and Concepts \nMay 25\nSelections from Isabel Wilkerson\, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents \nJune 8\nDerrick Bell\, “Chronicle of the Constitutional Contradiction” \nJune 22\nSelections from Bernestine Singley\, ed.\, When Race Becomes Real: Black and White Writers Confront Their Personal Histories \nJuly 6\nDerrick Bell\, “The Space Traders” \nJuly 20\nKimberlé Crenshaw\, “Demarginalizing the Intersection of Race and Sex” \nAugust 3\nEnrique Dussel\, “Eurocentrism and Modernity” \nAugust 17\nVine Deloria\, Jr.\, “A Better Day for Indians” \nAugust 31\nIan F. SUMMARY:Gathering Together
DESCRIPTION:We are praying we are able to be together IN PERSON as a synod on Saturday\, September 11\, 11am-4pm. \nWe will gather together — outdoors and masked — for lunch\, worship\, rock climbing\, zipline\, archery\, field games\, and a frozen treat! A great day for the whole family to enjoy! All ages are welcome. \nTentative schedule: \n11am Lunch available at the Pavilion\n12noon Worship under the Tent (including anniversary celebrations)\n1:15-4pm Activities\, Games\, Popsicles\, Free time \nThe Rev. Christopher Otten\, ELCA Director of Chaplaincy\, will be present with us to preach. During worship\, we will welcome Santa Maria\, Irving\, and kin-dom community\, and we will celebrate milestone ordination anniversaries. \nWorship will be led by musicians from Abiding Grace\, Southlake. Briarwood staff will be supervising the climbing wall and archery. Aaron and Katrina Colwick (Rejoice\, Coppell and Grace\, Carrolton) will be supervising field games for kids of all ages. Frios Pops (https://friospops.com/)\, one of our connections via our partnership with Paul Quinn College\, will be on site with gourmet popsicles during the afternoon. \nIt has been a tradition at NT-NL synod assemblies to have a book of remembrance in which congregations are invited to share the names of those who have died in the past year so they can be remembered in the prayers of the community. In recent years\, Bishop Gronberg has also invited us to share the names of those who have been baptized into Christ in the past year as well. We invite you to share those names through this online form\, and they will be incorporated into our worship. – Romans 14:8 \n“The events of this day are scheduled to be outside and as such as safe as possible. Masks will be encouraged at all times and required to enter any building. I hope that you will plan to join us as we gather as synod for the first time since April 2019. To be encouraged by community\, and fed by the bread of life.” Read Bishop Gronberg’s full blog post here. \nDisclaimer: In the interest of safety and public health due to the COVID-19 pandemic\, we reserve the right to enforce public health and safety measures\, depending on the conditions at the time\, at our discretion.

SUMMARY:NT-NL Leadership Convocation
DESCRIPTION:We are planning for this to be a hybrid event\, offered both in person* and online. \n*capped at 35 to be able to safely physically distance\, with everyone on site masked when indoors or within 6 feet of another person \nClick here for a detailed schedule. (as of October 13) \nClick here for the Monday Evening Prayer. \nWe will be focusing on how to capitalize on the new things you have been doing. How to turn our reactions and fast learnings in pandemic into more long term parts of our life. To live into the hybrid in person/online future that is a reality for us all. \nTo assist us in this work we will be led by Dr. Alicia Granholm. Dr. Granholm has two decades of experience in church leadership in mainline and non-denominational settings in the United States and abroad. Most recently she has been coaching four of our NT-NL congregations who are involved in the Leadership for Faithful Innovation Cohort that Bishop Gronberg highlighted in his 2021 synod assembly report. She will work with us on a theology of innovation as well as how to make new things become part of our life. Joining her will also be\, living into our hybrid culture\, online conversation partners that will enrich our time including folks from the Innovation Lab with the ELCA Churchwide office. As we address today’s biggest challenges and opportunities\, the ELCA Innovation Lab is a space for the church to generate ideas\, unleash creativity\, and create positive change in the world God so loves. \nDr. Cláudio Carvalhaes is a professor of liturgy and worship at Union Seminary in New York. He will be joining us online to facilitate conversation about worship and life in our new reality. Carvalhaes\, a native of Brazil\, has both studied and is a cross cultural scholar. He will help us think theologically about our praxis of worship in person and online. To consider practices that engage all participants as much as possible in the liturgy\, the “work of the people.” Dr. Carvalhaes is featured in this August 26 article: Ten Theology Books to Watch For. \nIt will be a good time for us to gather\, think together\, and learn. \nRegistration closed at 12noon on Friday\, October 15. We are not able to allow for late or same day / walk in registrations for this event. \nOvernight lodging at Briarwood is not available this year due to delayed repairs. If you have registered to attend in person and have not already contacted Jason to arrange housing\, you will need to do so on your own. \nDisclaimer: In the interest of safety and public health due to the COVID-19 pandemic\, we reserve the right to enforce public health and safety measures\, depending on the conditions at the time\, at our discretion.
