SUMMARY:Living Connected Workshop on Creation’s Gift of Waste
DESCRIPTION:Waste as a gift may sound strange\, but throughout creation\, the waste of one creature becomes the life of another in a continuous cycle. The exception is our species\, which declares things useless and buries or incinerates them. This Living Connected workshop will: \n\nReflect on the way our systems make it easy to be wasteful;\nDiscuss spiritual practices for viewing waste differently; and\nProvide resources for making faith-based choices about waste.\n\nNT-NL Public Witness is offering this workshop online twice in January 2021. The presenter is Katrina Martich\, a Lutheran Deaconess and licensed environmental engineer in Texas. \nSaturday\, January 23\, 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM CST \nTuesday\, January 26\, 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM CST \nRegister at katrinamartich.com for the Zoom link. \nLiving Connected presents creation care as a spiritual discipline\, formed by using the gifts of creation in just and loving ways. Workshops are offered at a reduced cost thanks to a grant from the NT-NL Synod Mission Endowment Fund. For more information\, send an email to Katrina at contact@katrinamartich.com

SUMMARY:Living Connected: Creation’s Gift of Material Goods
DESCRIPTION:Workshop on Creation’s Gift of Material Goods \nThe Living Connected project presents creation care as a spiritual discipline\, formed by using the gifts of creation in just and loving ways. The NT-NL Public Witness Team for Peace and Justice is offering Living Connected: Material Goods online twice in October. \nThe workshop presenter is Katrina Martich\, a Lutheran deaconess and environmental engineer. She currently serves as a green shepherd for Lutherans Restoring Creation and on the ELCA Sustainability Table. \nSaturday\, October 24\, 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM CDT\nTuesday\, October 27\, 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM CDT \nRegister at katrinamartich.com to receive the Zoom link. \nMaterial goods we use daily connect us to others and all creation through the world’s economy and ecology. SUMMARY:Better Conversations workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join the Public Witness Team for a Better Conversations workshop (formerly called Bridging the Divide) on Saturday\, June 29. \nWe live in a polarized society in which neither “side” listens to the other. Families are being split apart\, friendships are fractured\, and even our church family finds it\ndifficult to bridge the divide. This workshop faces controversial topics head-on by teaching the skills we all need for engaging in political discourse\, not just rationally\,\nbut in a way that fosters love and understanding. \nYou will learn:\n• How to redefine the “win\,” and why persuasion is not the point\n• What a “better” conversation sounds like\n• How to apply ground rules and conversation helpers\n• The role of listening and empathy in the midst of controversy \nThis workshop is for opinionated people from the right\, left and center of political and social positions. We encourage you to attend and participate in the biblical mandate of peacemaking. \nRegistration 9:30 am\nProgram 10:00 am to 2:00 pm \nShepherd of Life Lutheran Church\n715 E. Lamar Blvd. • Arlington\, TX 76011 \nCost: FREE (Your freewill offering is welcome.) Includes lunch. \nREGISTER HERE. \nDownload bulletin insert here.

SUMMARY:"Undoing Racism" Training
DESCRIPTION:(Limited to the first 20 registrants.) \nBASIC INFORMATION ABOUT THE UNDOING RACISM TRAINING \n \nThe two and one-half day “Undoing Racism” workshop presented by the People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond will be offered Tuesday\, August 28\, through Thursday\, August 30. Sessions for the first two days begin at 9:00 a.m. and end late afternoon. The Thursday session begins at 9:00 a.m. and ends at noon. The workshop is worth approximately 16 hours of continuing education units. \nThe Public Witness team is making this opportunity available free of charge to those in our churches who would like to attend but find the $350.00 tuition prohibitive. The team asks those who have adequate resources to make a contribution with the possibility of not only paying for oneself but also helping to defray the costs for someone else. \nSTRUCTURE AND LEARNING OBJECTIVES OF THE UNDOING RACISM WORKSHOP \nUndoing Racism® is the signature workshop of the Peoples’ Institute for Survival and Beyond. Through dialogue\, reflection\, role-playing\, strategic planning\, and presentations\, this intensive process challenges participants to analyze the structures of power and privilege that hinder social equity and prepares them to be effective organizers for justice. The multiracial team of organizers/trainers includes more than 100 men and women whose anti-racist organizing expertise includes years with civil\, labor and welfare rights struggles\, educational\, foster care\, social service\, and health reform movements\, as well as youth and grassroots community organizing. An average of 30 groups per month participate in The People’s Institute Undoing Racism®/Community Organizing process. \nWorkshop participants will:\n• Develop a common definition of racism and an understanding of its different forms: individual\, institutional\, linguistic\, and cultural;\n• Develop a common language and analysis for examining racism in the United States;\n• Understand one’s own connection to institutional racism and its impact on his/her work;\n• Understand why people are poor and the role of institutions in exacerbating institutional racism\, particularly for people and communities of color;\n• Understand the historical context for how racial classifications in the United States came to be and how and why they are maintained;\n• Understand the historical context for how U.S. institutions came to be and who they have been designed to serve;\n• Understand how all of us\, including white people\, are adversely impacted by racism every day\, everywhere;\n• Address surface assumptions about how your work is (or is not) affected by racism;\n• Develop awareness and understanding about ways to begin Undoing Racism®\n• Gain knowledge about how to be more effective in the work you do with your constituencies\, your organizations\, your communities\, your families;\n• Understand the role of community organizing and building effective multiracial coalitions as a means for Undoing Racism®. \nClick here to download a flyer. \nQuestions may be directed to chuck.hubbard@yahoo.com. \n(Limited to the first 20 registrants.)

SUMMARY:The Role of the Church in Undoing Racism
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOW.\nThe NT-NL Public Witness for Peace and Justice team is offering a workshop that will address racism from a faith-based perspective: \n\nTheology: what we believe; what God calls us to be and do\nHistory: how the past influences us today\nAccountability: how the Lutheran Church in faithfulness to God’s call must deal with the reality of racism\n\nThis workshop is designed to provide participants in the NT-NL missional area with an analysis that specifically focuses on systemic rather than individual factors of racism.  Through facilitated dialogue\, the workshop will increase understanding of what racism is\, how it is manifested in all systems and institutions\, and the role of Church in dismantling racism in the community of faith and in society at large. \nThe facilitators are skilled in helping to create a liberated space for developing a common language and understanding that opens the door for new\, bold\, and courageous conversations on institutional and structural racism.  These discussions are critical for discovering the deeply rooted issues that have become barriers to pursuing the mission that God has entrusted to the Church. \nThis safe place creates an atmosphere for all to engage in creative thinking\, that hopefully will lead to ongoing training and organizing support of a movement toward becoming an anti-racist Church. \nThis event is part of an effort by the NT-NL Synod to fulfill the resolution passed at the 2016 Churchwide Assembly that synods offer anti-racism training events at least once every two years. \nFacilitators \nMrs. Joyce James is a racial equity consultant who provides training and technical assistance to organizations across the country as they address institutional and structural racism. She is the former Associate Deputy Executive Commissioner for the Center for the Elimination of Disproportionality and Disparities and the Texas State Office of Minority Health. Mrs. James is credited with being the pioneer of efforts to address racial disproportionality and disparities in the Texas Child Protective Services (TxCPS) where she served as the Assistant Commissioner. Under her leadership\, Texas became the first state in the country to pass legislation requiring that a state agency such as TxCPS address racial disproportionality. Mrs. James is recognized nationally for the model she created and implemented that led to a reduction in disproportionality and disparities for African American and Native American children served through state agencies. She is a presenter with The People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond and was a keynote speaker at the 2014 Synod Assembly. \nRev. Joseph Barndt is an ELCA pastor who has dedicated the majority of his ministry to addressing issues of racism. For eighteen years\, he was the director of Crossroads Ministry (Chicago)\, an organization committed to dismantling racism and promoting anti-racist\, multicultural diversity within communities. For over forty years\, Pastor Barndt has been an anti-racism trainer. He is the author of a number of books\, including Becoming an Anti-Racist Church: Journeying Toward Wholeness and Understanding and Dismantling Racism: The Twenty-First Century Challenge to White America. Pastor Barndt is a community organizer and trainer with The People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond. He has served several congregations in California and Arizona. \nDates and Times \nFriday\, March 9\, 4:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. \nSaturday\, March 10\, 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. \nOther Details \nCost includes lunch on Saturday. This training is valued at $400 per person\, not including any meals or facilities. \nThere are reasonably priced hotels in the area for those who may have difficulty commuting. \nSome funding is available for those who may need assistance with registration and/or hotel fees. Please contact the Rev. Chuck Hubbard\, cell 214-395-6978 (leave a message or send a text). \nRegistration is limited to 40 people. (We will secure your spot when we receive your payment.) \nClick here for a brochure / bulletin insert. \nREGISTER NOW.

A hearing for NT-NL has been scheduled for January 20 at 10am at Shepherd of Life\, Arlington. \nThe ELCA Task Force on Women and Justice: One in Christ is releasing the draft as a crucial step in the development of a social statement that will be considered by the 2019 ELCA Churchwide Assembly. Task force members hope the next 11 months of comment and conversation among people of faith will be a widespread and instructive discernment on the timely themes and commitments in the draft. Your participation is desired and encouraged. \nELCA social statements are teaching and policy documents that provide broad frameworks to assist us in thinking about and discussing social issues in the context of faith and life. They are meant to help communities and individuals with moral formation\, discernment and thoughtful engagement with current social issues as we participate in God’s work in the world. Social statements also set policy for the ELCA and guide its advocacy and work as a publicly engaged church. \nThe issue of women and justice is a long-standing struggle that pervades our society\, our history\, and our faith tradition. Currently\, there has been much discussion of a social tipping point\, highlighted by the current environment of the #MeToo movement. The Public Witness committee\, Bishop Gronberg\, and the One in Christ Task Force all hope you will participate in the review and affirmation of this document. This is a huge opportunity to guide the future of our faith. Please read this document and come with recommendations. All are welcome! \nThe entire statement can be found in the first 2\,750 words of the draft\, what is called the Basic Statement. The FAQ about the process and the two-page overview of the content also attached are designed to help explain the draft and the process that has led to it. Questions can be directed to womenandjustice@elca.org. \nFind out more here: elca.org/womenandjustice.
