SUMMARY:ELCA Extravaganza 2021
DESCRIPTION:The Extravaganza is the annual gathering of children\, youth\, and family ministry leaders from across the ELCA. It is so much more than a conference: it’s space to be stretched\, it’s worship\, it’s inspiring speakers\, it’s learning from colleagues across the country\, it’s sharing your insights with others\, it’s informative and transformative. The Extravaganza is renewing\, educational\, and connects you with others…then sends you home strengthened for the ministry to which you have been called. \nThe Extravaganza is for the professional and the volunteer. It is for the old and the young. It is for the urban\, the suburban\, and the rural. It is for pastors\, it is for lay people. It is for all adult leaders who share in the adventure we call children\, youth\, and family ministry! \nLocation: Online \n\nFor 2021: \nThe scriptures are full of stories of God’s people holding loosely to their plans and learning to trust in the grace and the mission of God. \nAnd so\, as God’s people\, we are reminded that grace is a gift of God\, and trust follows grace. God calls on God’s people to trust in God’s abundance\, love and promise. Too often\, we try and maintain our own sense of control. But if ministry in 2020 has taught us anything\, it has taught us that we are not in control. The world is a broken\, turbulent place and we cannot navigate these troubled waters by ourselves. \nAnd so\, obediently\, we trust in the work of the Holy Spirit in the midst of turbulent times. And we partner with God\, serving as God’s hands doing God’s work in a world that is in need of hope. \nWe hold loosely\, letting go of our need to control\, creating space for the Spirit to work\, and trusting in God\, who has a vision for the world. \nExtravaganza 2021 will explore God’s call to hold loosely to our own plans\, and our need to control\, and to trust in the one who comes to create\, to redeem and to sustain. God’s call for us to “Hold Loosely” and trust is more important now than ever\, as we live and do ministry in a time of pandemic\, of racial injustice and unrest\, of social division and political turmoil. \nOur conversations at #ext21 will center around five questions: \n\n\nHow do we help those we work with navigate the grief of losing “normal?” How do we navigate that same grief for ourselves?\nHow do we care for ourselves in the midst of accompanying others in their pain?\nHow do we navigate change?\nWhat should we do next?\nHow do we find hope in the midst of chaos?\n\n\nIt is in the words of Ephesians 2:8 that we are reminded that we place our trust in God’s grace\, which provides guidance and direction during these hard days. And that this grace is a gift that we discover when we hold loosely. \n“For by grace you have been saved through faith\, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.” – Ephesians 2:8

A gift planner is available in each synod that can guide you to clarify your goals and objectives in planning. Any congregation member can establish a robust personal legacy plan with the guidance of the synod gift planner. Those with existing plans should consider reviewing their plans to make sure they continue to meet their goals for family and ministry. \nAll members of ELCA congregations are invited to participate in these webinars. SUMMARY:2021 John Hope Franklin Reconciliation in America National Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The Future of Tulsa’s Past: The Centennial of the Tulsa Race Massacre and Beyond \nThe Arkansas-Oklahoma Synod invites all our siblings from across the ELCA to join us digitally for the 2021 John Hope Franklin Reconciliation in America National Symposium\, May 26-29.  Following the Symposium\, on the afternoon of May 29th\, everyone is invited to join us for a Zoom conversation where we will continue addressing the themes of Symposium and talk specifically about how those themes speak to us as a church.  Attending the Symposium is not necessary to be a part of the post-symposium gathering. \nThe National Symposium is an annual event sponsored by the John Hope Franklin Center for Reconciliation in Tulsa\, OK and brings together local and nationally known speakers and people from around the country to learn about and discuss ways to work against racism and for racial reconciliation.  Founded in 2007\, the vision of the John Hope Franklin Center for Reconciliation in Tulsa is to transform the bitterness and mistrust caused by years of racial division and violence into a hopeful future of reconciliation and cooperation for Tulsa and the nation.  In the spirit of John Hope Franklin (1915-2009)\, American historian and educator noted for his scholarly reappraisal of the American Civil War era and the importance of the black struggle in shaping modern American identity\, the Center promotes reconciliation and generating trust through scholarly work and constructive community engagement. \nIndividuals must register for the Symposium through the JHF Center website: https://www.jhfnationalsymposium.org. A schedule and list of speakers for the Symposium is also available on the website. \nFrom 1:00-3:30 PM CDT on Saturday\, May 29\, ELCA participants in the Symposium and others are invited to join the Arkansas-Oklahoma Synod for a time of reflection and conversation.  Led by a panel including  Arkansas-Oklahoma Synod Bishop Michael Girlinghouse\, Ms. Vanessa Adams-Harris\, John Hope Franklin Center for Reconciliation\, Mr. Bill Horne\, ELCA Vice-president\,  and Ms. Judith Roberts\, ELCA Sr. Director for Diversity\, Equity & Inclusion we will discuss the complicity and silence of the white church in the perpetuation of racial injustice\, including violent events like the Tulsa Race Massacre\, how the church is working against racial injustice today\, and ways we can show up and step up to work for change in our church\, our local communities and nation in the days ahead.  ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton will share concluding thoughts and reflections about how we can move together as a church to address these issues. \nIf you would like to join us for the post-symposium conversation\, you will need to register at: https://www.aokelca.org/event-details/2021-john-hope-franklin-annual-symposium to receive the Zoom link and password for the ELCA event. \nIf you have questions please call the A-OK synod office at (918) 492-4288

Our church continues to live through the COVID-19 pandemic. Physical distancing has changed the way we worship and serve. But the need is great\, and God’s church is at work. \nWe’re not sure what the impact of this crisis will look like in September\, but we continue to be church together. We are witnessing the outpouring of love and concern that God’s people have for one another. Our congregations continue to maintain feeding ministries\, serve communities disproportionately affected by COVID-19 infection and assist people who are financially burdened by the economic downturn. \n“Service in the Time of COVID-19” was developed to offer service project ideas and considerations for safely supporting your community in this time of pandemic. \nAs we gather together in service to our neighbors\, we are reminded of one of our most basic convictions as Lutherans: All of life in Jesus Christ — every act of service\, in every daily calling\, in every corner of life — flows freely from a living\, daring confidence in God’s grace. Be sure to save the date and visit ELCA.org/DayofService for updates to our resources. \nYou work every day to make your community a better place. We look forward to working together with you on “God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday.

SUMMARY:Implicit Bias Training
DESCRIPTION:For people who strive to see others as God sees them. \n“We are all caught in an inescapable network of mutuality\, tied in a single garment of identity. Whatever affects one directly\, affects all indirectly.” – Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. \nResearch on “implicit bias” suggests that people can act on the basis of prejudice and stereotypes without intending to do so. While psychologists in the field of “implicit social cognition” study consumer products\, self-esteem\, food\, alcohol\, political values\, and more\, the most striking and well-known research has focused on implicit biases toward members of socially stigmatized groups\, such as African-Americans\, women\, and the LGBTQIA2S+ community. For example\, imagine Frank\, who explicitly believes that women and men are equally suited for careers outside the home. Despite his explicitly egalitarian belief\, Frank might nevertheless behave in any number of biased ways\, from distrusting feedback from female co-workers to hiring equally qualified men over women. Part of the reason for Frank’s discriminatory behavior might be an implicit gender bias. Psychological research on implicit bias has grown steadily\, raising metaphysical\, epistemological\, and ethical questions. – Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy \nTraining is FREE and open to the public. \nAvailable online two dates and times: Monday\, October 17\, 2pm Eastern\, OR Tuesday\, October 18\, 7pm Eastern \n \nStacey Waters began her career with the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission (PHRC) investigating unlawful discrimination in 2008. She attended The Lincoln University and earned a Bachelor of Arts in English/Liberal Arts. She attended Shippensburg University and earned her Master of Science in Counseling/College Student Personnel. In 2014\, she left the Commission to work as an Equal Opportunity Specialist at the PA Department of Labor and Industry. In 2018\, she joined the PA Department of Corrections as Chief of Investigations and Training where she continued to investigate unlawful discrimination and provide a variety of trainings including\, but not limited to\, Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion Training and Unconscious Bias Training. In September of 2021\, she returned to PHRC as an Education and Outreach Coordinator educating the community about unlawful discrimination and other relevant topics. \nOffered by Kindling Faith: Center for Sabbath Rest and Formation (United Lutheran Seminary) and Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission \nRegister here. \nClick here for a flyer with full details.

SUMMARY:The Tenth Annual Herbener Lecture: Becoming More Human Through Worship
DESCRIPTION:Guest Lecturer:  Rev. Peter W. Marty \nThose who make a practice of committing their lives to worship discover\, over time\, something interesting. When they leave worship they see an “outside world” that is smaller and more paltry than they had thought. Its politics are puny\, its consumerism is hollow\, its care for the weak is peripheral. The very assumptions of what constitutes the “Real World\,” assumptions that typically guide our lives as shoppers\, scientists\, social workers\, and sales associates suddenly become undone once we realize how the grandeur and mystery of God make us more whole than the more cramped outside world. We can do all kinds of things on our own\, quite independently and self-sufficiently\, thank you very much. But what we can never become without worship is fully human. Worship is where we figure out who we get to be in the presence of a God who gives and gives\, and always out of love. \nBegins at 4pm\nDinner by reservation begins at 5:30pm\nSung Evening Prayer begins at 6:30pm \nFREE ADMISSION: Free-will donation will cover dinner \nFor full details and to register: http://www.luthercenter-northtexas.org/

SUMMARY:Blue Christmas Online Service | Servicio en línea de Navidad azul
DESCRIPTION:Women of the ELCA (WELCA) will be hosting a Blue Christmas online service on Wednesday\, December 21\, starting at 7pm Central: \n“Our Blue Christmas Service offers a safe place to bring your grief\, fear\, and loss. Brief readings. Quiet and reflective music. Prayers. All are welcome. Spanish translation provided.” \nÚnase a nosotros para el tercer servicio anual de Navidad Azul \nAdvance registration required. \nIf you’re not familiar with a Blue Christmas service\, here is some context adapted from a 2020 WELCA blog post: \nWe’re often taught that Christmas should be a happy season. But it’s hard to sing “Joy to the World” when sadness engulfs your heart. The reality of life—memories of the past and the pain of the present—can leave many people feeling less than merry in December. It might be the death of a loved one\, a discouraging diagnosis\, a job loss\, or some other family crisis. Add to it the SARS-CoV-2 (often referred to as COVID-19) pandemic and all that it has wrought and continues to wreak. \nWe have committed ourselves to promote healing and wholeness in the church\, the society\, and the world. How can we do that for those who are sad or suffering this season? We will gather on the longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere—the Winter Solstice—December 21. Into God’s presence\, we will bring whatever weighs us down: the death of a loved one\, the loss of a job\, the brokenness of a relationship\, loneliness\, isolation\, and worries for the state of our world\, just to name a few. And we will be fed by words\, music\, and prayers. \nDeath and disappointment are very much a part of life. However\, when we experience death or disappointment while the rest of the world seems focused on ho-ho-ho happiness\, realities and expectations collide. Healing rituals like the Blue Christmas Service acknowledge painful realities and re-connect those of us who mourn with the redeeming and reconciling love of God in Jesus Christ.

SUMMARY:2023 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
DESCRIPTION:The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is January 18-25 with the theme “Do good; seek justice” from Isaiah 1:17\n  \nThe Week of Prayer for Christian Unity (Jan. 18-25) has been observed for more than 100 years\, during which Christians around the world have prayed for visible Christian unity\, striving to move toward the fulfillment of Jesus’ prayer at the Last Supper “that they all may be one” (John 17:21). \nThe theme for 2023 comes from Isaiah 1:17 – “Do good; seek justice.” The entire scriptural passage for the theme is Isaiah 1:12-18\, which laments a lack of justice among the people of God and calls for God’s people to “learn to do good.” \nThe 2023 theme was developed with the assistance of a group of Christians in Minnesota\, convened by the Minnesota Council of Churches. Minneapolis became a flashpoint for calls for racial justice and equity following the murder of George Floyd. \nLike the religious people so fiercely denounced by the biblical prophets\, some Christian believers have been or continue to be complicit in supporting or perpetuating prejudice and oppression and fostering division. History shows that\, rather than recognizing the dignity of every human being made in the image of God\, Christians have too often involved themselves in structures of sin such as slavery\, colonization\, segregation and apartheid\, which have stripped others of their dignity. Even within our churches\, Christians have failed to recognize the dignity of all the baptized and have belittled the dignity of their siblings in Christ. \nIsaiah challenged God’s people in his day to learn to do good together\, to seek justice together\, to rescue the oppressed together\, to defend the orphan and plead for the widow together. The prophet’s challenge applies equally to us today. \nThe North Texas Conference of the UMC will host an Ecumenical Worship Service at 7 p.m. on Jan. 19 at Custer Road UMC\, 6601 Custer Road\, Plano\, TX 75023. The NTC will gather with its Lutheran\, Presbyterian\, Episcopalian\, and Catholic siblings to worship God together. \n(shared from our partners at the North Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church) \n\nWorld Council of Churches Resources for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 2023
