SUMMARY:Lands of Luther Tour
DESCRIPTION:An 11-day tour of the lands of Luther\, hosted by Bishop Kevin Kanouse and visiting: \nRhine Valley • Eisenach • Erfurt • Eisleben • Wittenberg\nBerlin • Leipzig • Nuremberg • Augsburg • Munich \nDear Friends\, \nOctober 31\, 1517\, Martin Luther ignited the Protestant Reformation movement in the small German village of Wittenberg\, Germany. From that day to this the world has not been the same. \nAs we approach the 500th anniversary of the Reformation\, we will visit many of the German sites important to Martin Luther and the start of the Reformation movement. \nIn addition\, we will visit Berlin\, Munich\, and other quaint villages and churches. A stop by the Hofbrauhaus in Munich is always in order! This is a wonderful time to tour LutherLand as Germany is all dressed up to welcome anniversary visitors. \nThere will be lots of fun with your family\, friends and fellow church members. I hope you will join us for the vacation tour of a lifetime! \nSincerely\, \nBishop Kevin Kanouse \nDownload the LutherLands2016 brochure here.

SUMMARY:NT-NL Table Talk: Congregational Leadership in Changing Times for Changing Churches
DESCRIPTION:Here are the recordings from this event: \nCongregational Leadership in Changing Times for Changing Churches\, Part 1 \nCongregational Leadership in Changing Times for Changing Churches\, Part 2 \nTo download the PowerPoint slides\, as presented: \nhttps://www.ntnl.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/NT-NL-Table-Talk-October-2016-As-Presented.pptx \nA suggested donation of $5 or more would be appreciated to help us cover costs. You can donate directly to Briarwood. \n  \n\nThe speaker is Nathan Kirkpatrick\, managing director of the Alban Institute at Duke Divinity School in Durham\, NC.  Nathan designs educational programs and facilitates leadership development opportunities for clergy.  He has degrees from Wake Forest University and Duke University Divinity School and is a doctoral candidate at the University of Durham in Durham\, UK.  Nathan is a priest in the Episcopal church.\n \nThe topic / theme has been expanded. Here’s the tentative schedule:\n\nMorning session:  Three trends that are shaping congregational life today\n–          Changing shape of congregations\n–          Changing shape of leadership\n–          Changing trust in clergy and organized religion\n–          Table talk on named trends (and others) and how they are shaping congregational life and leadership\nAfternoon session: Recovering the heart of our vocation: How these trends are shaping ministry\n–          Cultivating the capacity for friendships with God\, with others\, with self\n–          Equipping the saints for ministry (today)\n–          Table talk on blessings and bedevilments in our vocation\n\nFrom Nathan Kirkpatrick: “My intent is that this will not be – by any stretch of the imagination – a lecture-based event. There will be presentations to give us a shared vocabulary to talk about what we are experiencing and then table talks to talk about what that looks like in our settings. My desire is a truly interactive day.”\n\n  \n$12 in advance / $15 at the door \n(includes continental breakfast and hot lunch)

SUMMARY:Lutheran Hymn Festival 2016
DESCRIPTION:This will be the tenth Lutheran Hymn Festival to be held in Dallas since 1993. This year’s festival will feature hymnody both from the Lutheran tradition with next year’s 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Many of the hymns are written and composed by Martin Luther. \nThe purpose of the Lutheran Hymn Festival is to: \n\nGlorify God – soli Deo gloria!\nEncourage one another in the faith by singing hymns. The Scriptures bid us to do so: “…singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves\, singing and making melody to the Lord in your hearts\, giving thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 5:19 – 20 NRSV). And again\, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms\, hymns\, and spiritual songs to God. And whatever you do\, in word and deed\, do everything in the name of our Lord Jesus\, giving thanks to God the Father through Him” (Colossians 3:16-17 NRSV).\nProclaim the Gospel to the Metroplex community.\nEncourage and support the training of young church musicians. The residual funds from this evening’s festival will be used for scholarships to the Lutheran Summer Music Academy and Festival.\n\n  \nSEEKING EXPERIENCED SINGERS:\nThe Lutheran Hymn Festival Choir is made up of volunteer choristers from churches throughout the DFW area. This is a unique group since it meets to rehearse a limited number of times while needing to learn a large amount of music. In addition\, there are places for only about 100 singers; that means there will only be about 25 in each voice part: soprano\, alto\, tenor\, and bass. Because of all of these factors\, we are looking for choristers who learn quickly\, have had some musical training (particularly in choirs)\, and can commit to coming to the rehearsals. \nIf you can answer “yes” to each of the questions below\, then please consider registering to sing in the choir: \n\nI can attend both the rehearsals on October 9 and October 16 at Zion Lutheran Church.\nI can attend one or both rehearsals on September 11 and September 25. Singers are strongly encouraged to attend both rehearsals.\nI sing in a church choir regularly and/or I read music.\n\nADULTS \nDo you know children who love to sing and sing well? Help us find children in our Lutheran congregations and schools who would like to participate in the Children’s Choir. \n\nChildren must be in grade 4 through 8\, have an unchanged voice (no baritones)\, be able to match pitch and sing back melodies they hear\, and enjoy singing. They do not have to have a lot of previous experience if they meet the qualifications above.\nThere will be two mandatory Saturday morning rehearsals on October 1 and October 15 at Zion Lutheran Church in Dallas prior to the Festival.\nThe choir will be led by Cynthia Nott\, Artistic Director of the Children’s Chorus of Greater Dallas.\n\nThis year the children’s choir will be made up entirely of children from Lutheran Churches and Schools. If you know of specific children who would be good candidates for the choir\, please let them know about this opportunity—or you can email their contact information directly to the Children’s Choir Coordinator\, Lois Eatherton at leatherton@ziondallas.org\, by Wednesday\, August 31. \n  \nPURCHASE TICKETS \n  \nFor full details of this event\, check out the Lutheran Hymn Festival website.

SUMMARY:FREE Webinar: New Overtime Rules
DESCRIPTION:The U.S. Department of Labor has adopted new overtime regulations under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)\, which go into effect on December 1\, 2016. Among other changes\, these regulations increase the minimum salary for exempt employees from $23\,000 to $47\,476. Many congregations\, synods\, and other ministries of the church have questions about how this impacts their employees and ministries. Does it apply to churches? What about pastors? Youth workers? Sextons? How about schools? Or camps? Join us for a free webinar on how the new regulations will affect religious institutions\, and try to answer many of these questions. \nHosts: \nSteve Knowles\, Senior Attorney\, Davis & Kuelthau \nThomas Cunniff\, Associate General Counsel\, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) \nRegister here: https://community.elca.org/FLSAwebinar \nMust register by October 14.
