SUMMARY:Chapel Service & Public Lecture with Kathleen Norris
DESCRIPTION:Chapel Service at 10 a.m. in the Chapel of the Abiding Presence \nPublic Lecture at 7:30 p.m. in Jackson Auditorium \nKathleen Norris is an award-winning poet and a New York Times-bestselling memoirist on matters of Christian spirituality. Her many books include “The Cloister Walk\,” “Acedia & Me: A Marriage Monks\, and a Writer’s Life\,” “Dakota: A Spiritual Geography\,” “Amazing Grace: A Vocabulary of Faith\,” and “The Virgin of Bennington”. After spending two decades of her adult life away from the Christianity of her childhood\, Norris joined a Presbyterian congregation and began exploring ancient spiritual practices of silence and contemplation in association with Roman Catholic monks. Open to doubt and welcoming beauty\, her writing brims with insight about the challenges of the spiritual life today. \nThis is a part of TLU’s year-long series of events recognizing 500 Years of Reformation.

SUMMARY:A screening of "Luther"
DESCRIPTION:The Dallas Eric M. Warburg Chapter of the American Council on Germany\nand\nthe Johanniter Humanitarian Group – Texas \nat the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation cordially invite you to a\nscreening of \nLuther\nSaturday\, October 28\, 2017\n7:30pm to 10:00pm \nChrist Lutheran Church\n3001 Lovers Lane\nDallas\, TX 75225 \nThere is no charge to attend this event\, but RSVPs are requested.\nRSVP (acceptances only) at: \nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/screening-of-luther-a-dallas-warburg-chapter-event-tickets-38666744273 \n\nIn 1516-17\, Johann Tetzel\, a Dominican friar and papal commissioner for indulgences\, was sent to Germany to raise money to build St Peter’s Basilica in Rome. On October 31\, 1517\, Martin Luther wrote to Albrecht\, Archbishop of Mainz and Magdeburg\, protesting against the sale of indulgences. He enclosed in his letter a copy of his “Disputation of Martin Luther on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences\,” which came to be known as Ninty-five Theses. Hans Hillerbrand writes that Luther had no intention of confronting the church\, but saw his disputation as a scholarly objection to church practices\, and the tone of the writing is accordingly “searching\, rather than doctrinaire.” Hillerbrand further writes that there is nevertheless an undercurrent of challenge in several of the theses\, particularly in Thesis 86\, which asks: “Why does the pope\, whose wealth today is greater than the wealth of the richest Crassus\, build the basilica of St. Peter with the money of poor believers rather than with his own money?” Luther objected to a saying attributed to Johann Tetzel that “As soon as the coin in the coffer rings\, the soul from purgatory [also attested as ‘into heaven’] springs.” He insisted that\, since forgiveness was God’s alone to grant\, those who claimed that indulgences absolved buyers from all punishments and granted them salvation were in error. Christians\, he said\, must not slacken in following Christ on account of such false assurances. The film Luther is a 2003 biopic about the life of Martin Luther. It begins during a thunderstorm in 1505\, as Luther is returning to his home. For fear of losing his life in the storm\, he commits his life to God and becomes an Augustinian monk… \n\n

SUMMARY:North Texas Reformation Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Churches all over the world are commemorating the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation. This is truly a “once in a lifetime event.” Celebrating this momentous era of the beginning of Protestantism will be a highlight for us as Lutherans. \nMartin Luther said\, “Next to the Word of God\, the noble art of music is the greatest treasure in the world.” So\, what better than to mark this anniversary with music? \nFollowing the calling from Psalm 95:1\, “Oh come\, let us sing to the LORD; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!” a number of churches in the Dallas – Fort Worth Metroplex have been planning the NORTH TEXAS REFORMATION CELEBRATION – a series of local church concerts culminating in two identical gala concerts in November. \nThe NORTH TEXAS REFORMATION CELEBRATION will take place on November 4 at Broadway Baptist Church\, home of the Rildia Bee O’Bryan Cliburn Organ\, in Fort Worth and on November 5 at Meyerson Symphony Center\, home of the Lay Family Concert Organ\, in Dallas. Make plans to join us on these joyous occasions of praising our Lord and Savior through beautiful music and songs performed by the spectacular CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY CHICAGO WIND SYMPHONY AND KAPELLE (choir) along with a regional mass choir including singers from Concordia High School\, Austin\, TX. \nThe internationally renowned Wind Symphony has performed in 43 states\, Canada\, Eastern Europe\, China\, and\, this past spring\, in South Africa. The group has a commitment to the finest traditional and contemporary sacred and secular repertoire\, and has recorded 13 compact discs of sacred music. \nLet us join together in remembering one of the most significant events of Christian lives; singing praises\, giving thanks and renewing our spirit. Expect to hear\, sing\, and feel our most cherished hymns\, as well as newly written pieces for this Reformation season\, accompanied by the unique and dynamic pipe organs. \nTickets and more information are available at ReformationDFW.org or by emailing NailedIt@ReformationDFW.org. You may also follow the events on Facebook. \nClick here if you are interested in Sponsorship. \n“As long as we live there is never enough singing.” ― Martin Luther \nWatch for Celebration Events throughout North Texas. SUMMARY:(RE)FORMATION: a Film by Shannon Ivey
DESCRIPTION:Location: Studio Theatre at Weston Center \nMust the Christian church include stained glass windows\, a marketing campaign\, or a multi-million dollar media setup to spread the word of God? Do pastors need a brand? Jesus was a homeless Jew\, a political radical\, and a servant to the broken – would his “brand” even survive in 21st Century America? In 1517\, Martin Luther challenged the Roman Catholic Church with a similar set of questions and it led to the Protestant Reformation. 500 years later\, as a group of artists renovate a transition home for discarded youth\, they explore the meaning of church\, holy ground\, and Jesus’ mission of love. Is the Christian Church in need of a new (re)Formation? \nShannon Ivey is a professor of dramatic media at TLU and the founder of Theatre For Change – a San Antonio-based nonprofit committed to linking the stories inherent within theatre\, film\, and new media to the needs and messages of nonprofit organizations. \nThis event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Lecture with Anne Lamott
DESCRIPTION:From our friends at SMU / Perkins:\n.\nInspire even more radical kindness in the life of your congregation! Read Anne Lamott’s Hallelujah Anyway: Rediscovering Mercy with your Bible study group or Sunday School class. Then come hear her speak about the book in person when she gives a free lecture during the Perkins Fall Convocation on November 13\, 2017\, at 7:30 p.m. in McFarlin Auditorium on the campus of SMU.\n.\n\n.\n“Mercy is radical kindness\,” writes Lamott in her book\, Hallelujah Anyway: Rediscovering Mercy. “Mercy means offering or being offered aid in desperate straits. Mercy is not deserved. SUMMARY:Hearing on the ELCA Draft Social Statement on Women and Justice
DESCRIPTION:The Draft Social Statement on Women and Justice was released on November 15. The task force hopes that every synod will have at least one hearing on the draft. Please find more information about hearings in the FAQ. A hearing for NT-NL has been scheduled for January 20 at 10am at Shepherd of Life\, Arlington. \nThe ELCA Task Force on Women and Justice: One in Christ is releasing the draft as a crucial step in the development of a social statement that will be considered by the 2019 ELCA Churchwide Assembly. Task force members hope the next 11 months of comment and conversation among people of faith will be a widespread and instructive discernment on the timely themes and commitments in the draft. Your participation is desired and encouraged. \nELCA social statements are teaching and policy documents that provide broad frameworks to assist us in thinking about and discussing social issues in the context of faith and life. They are meant to help communities and individuals with moral formation\, discernment and thoughtful engagement with current social issues as we participate in God’s work in the world. Social statements also set policy for the ELCA and guide its advocacy and work as a publicly engaged church. \nThe issue of women and justice is a long-standing struggle that pervades our society\, our history\, and our faith tradition. Currently\, there has been much discussion of a social tipping point\, highlighted by the current environment of the #MeToo movement. The Public Witness committee\, Bishop Gronberg\, and the One in Christ Task Force all hope you will participate in the review and affirmation of this document. This is a huge opportunity to guide the future of our faith. Please read this document and come with recommendations. All are welcome! \nThe entire statement can be found in the first 2\,750 words of the draft\, what is called the Basic Statement. The FAQ about the process and the two-page overview of the content also attached are designed to help explain the draft and the process that has led to it. Questions can be directed to womenandjustice@elca.org. \nFind out more here: elca.org/womenandjustice.
