Guidelines for Relief Funds from MEF
The Northern Texas-Northern Louisiana (NT-NL) Synod of the ELCA is IN MISSION TOGETHER. In the time of this global pandemic, both our congregations/ministries and leaders are experiencing immense challenges.
With gratitude to God for past generosity across our synod, the Board of the NT-NL Mission Endowment Fund (MEF) is now making funds available to relieve financial burdens related to the uncontrollable circumstances of the COVID-19 virus. The Relief Fund is designed to help congregations and ministries within NT-NL to make it through short-term shortfalls of cash until regular operations can continue.
This monetary support is offered from the MEF as an adaptable Good Faith Loan, repayable over a two-year period — in full, in part, or can be forgiven. Applicants will be asked to include other resources and avenues they are pursuing for financial relief.
The use of the funds will not be restricted, as each situation for relief varies, but the application asks you to state specifically the intended purpose(s).
Each recipient will sign a covenant agreement and be required to submit a follow-up report.
For many, the largest cost is salary and benefits for rostered ministers, which will still need to be paid during this time of physical distancing. The Application can be submitted for other needs such as the salary and benefits of other staff, utilities, mortgage, insurance, or other emergency needs.
You may apply for two months of assistance. Funds will be distributed as approved, one month at a time, until the amount in the Relief Fund is depleted. After two months, if Relief Funds remain and your needs continue, you may reapply.
Bishop Erik Gronberg shares his support and remarks: The Mission Endowment Fund of our synod is a gift that we have been given to steward. Its purpose is to encourage and seed new mission efforts in our congregations and ministries throughout NT-NL. During this time of the COVID-19 crisis, sustaining ministry and particularly supporting rostered leaders and staff health care is a priority. I am grateful that the MEF Board has approved these funds to serve our communities in this time. It is one more sign of how we are committed to doing our work #InMissionTogether.
