SUMMARY:NT-NL Leadership Convocation
DESCRIPTION:We are planning for this to be a hybrid event\, offered both in person* and online. \n*capped at 35 to be able to safely physically distance\, with everyone on site masked when indoors or within 6 feet of another person \nClick here for a detailed schedule. (as of October 13) \nClick here for the Monday Evening Prayer. \nWe will be focusing on how to capitalize on the new things you have been doing. How to turn our reactions and fast learnings in pandemic into more long term parts of our life. To live into the hybrid in person/online future that is a reality for us all. \nTo assist us in this work we will be led by Dr. Alicia Granholm. Dr. Granholm has two decades of experience in church leadership in mainline and non-denominational settings in the United States and abroad. Most recently she has been coaching four of our NT-NL congregations who are involved in the Leadership for Faithful Innovation Cohort that Bishop Gronberg highlighted in his 2021 synod assembly report. She will work with us on a theology of innovation as well as how to make new things become part of our life. Joining her will also be\, living into our hybrid culture\, online conversation partners that will enrich our time including folks from the Innovation Lab with the ELCA Churchwide office. As we address today’s biggest challenges and opportunities\, the ELCA Innovation Lab is a space for the church to generate ideas\, unleash creativity\, and create positive change in the world God so loves. \nDr. Cláudio Carvalhaes is a professor of liturgy and worship at Union Seminary in New York. He will be joining us online to facilitate conversation about worship and life in our new reality. Carvalhaes\, a native of Brazil\, has both studied and is a cross cultural scholar. He will help us think theologically about our praxis of worship in person and online. To consider practices that engage all participants as much as possible in the liturgy\, the “work of the people.” Dr. Carvalhaes is featured in this August 26 article: Ten Theology Books to Watch For. \nIt will be a good time for us to gather\, think together\, and learn. \nRegistration closed at 12noon on Friday\, October 15. We are not able to allow for late or same day / walk in registrations for this event. \nOvernight lodging at Briarwood is not available this year due to delayed repairs. You can find the approximate times in the proposed agenda.* \nREGISTRATION DETAILS: \n\nVoting Members registered in advance (by Friday\, September 18) to be able to attend and vote in this year’s Assembly. You will receive a reminder email from Zoom containing information about joining the webinar the day before\, and one hour before\, Assembly. You may need to check your junk / spam folder. Once you log into the Zoom webinar\, be sure your name reflects how you registered so that you can be confirmed and allowed to vote. \nWe will be live streaming to the NT-NL Facebook page (no account required) and recording this event for all other attendees. \n\n\n— — — \n\nTo access the Assembly Reference Materials: https://www.ntnl.org/2020-assembly-reference-materials/ (more items to be added in the coming weeks) \nImportant notes for this year’s Assembly: \nThanks to our good stewardship in previous years\, we can offer this online experience at no cost to congregations. \nEach voting member will need their own email address to register\, and they will need to log into the Zoom webinar on September 26 with that same email address. \nEach voting member will need to access the Zoom webinar with their own device to be able to vote. Ideally\, this would be a computer so that polling (our voting option this year) is easily seen and accessed. If a tablet or phone is the only option\, we highly recommend practicing before Assembly on how to access all the functions of Zoom webinars on each device\, specifically where to find the poll option in a timely manner when that opens for each ballot. \nIf any voting member does not have access to any type of device to be able to login into (not call into) the Zoom webinar\, please contact jason@ntnl.org as soon as possible\, and we will research options. If you are new to Zoom or have ever had issues with Zoom or your device\, please plan to log in up to 30 minutes prior to the orientation to troubleshoot with Jason beforehand. We highly recommend every voting member attend at least one orientation to help us avoid being overwhelmed with requests the day of Assembly. \nWe ask that all Assembly\, including technology-related\, questions be routed to jason@ntnl.org. While his prayer and discernment led him to that point\, his call for direct resistance to unjust actions of the state began much earlier. This session will introduce Bonhoeffer\, his context\, and his increasing calls for resistance\, both within the church and in direct word and action against the state. \n  \nBonhoeffer the Lutheran\nTuesday\, January 26\, 10am–Noon \nBonhoeffer has become a broadly popular figure throughout western Christianity. His stance against Adolf Hitler\, the Third Reich\, and accommodating elements within German Christianity cost him his life. This is a new take on the “Lumberjack” men’s retreat and is open to men of all ages. \nThe theme for 2020 is “Behold the Lamb of God” based on the assigned Gospel for January 19\, John 1:29-42. We will reflect on the story of John the Baptist and his call to proclaim Jesus as the light of the world. Bishop Gronberg will lead our devotions and bible study. Dan Lund\, the leader of NT-NL’s prison ministry\, Church of the Damascus Road\, will be with us throughout the weekend to speak about this important work and how in this ministry we bring light to those incarcerated. \nA service project (including some “Lumberjack” type activities to provide firewood) will be a focus of the weekend. You may email kris@ntnl.org to be added to that notification list for the later revised event. \nThis training is helpful not only for pastoral leaders seeking to explore new vocational paths but also for improving leadership skills for congregational change. \nThe basic curriculum is designed to introduce clergy and lay professionals to the practice of intentional interim ministry. Although focusing on Lutheran theology and polity\, the training is open to all lay leaders and clergy desiring and/or called to this special ministry in congregations during a pastoral transition. \nPhase I will be in person\, August 12-15\, at Briarwood Leadership Center. \nPhase I (Planting) is a residential week ‘focusing on the theory\, theology\, leadership skills\, and congregational systems related to intentional interim ministry \nPhase II will be over time and completed individually. \nPhase II (Cultivating) is a six-month experience in a parish or institutional setting\, ideally in a leadership transition\, in which the participant in this program “puts into practice” the material learned in Phase I. \nPhase III will be in person\, February 10-13\, 2020\, also held at Briarwood. \nPhase III (Harvesting) is the second residential week\, in which\, through a group process\, you will share one of your critical incident reports\, review material learned in Phase I\, and learn more about the dynamics of congregations in pastoral transition\, and your leadership skills and needs. You will also discuss the biblical and theological connections in this special ministry. \nLed by Paul Svingen\, Tim Drom\, and Susan Baldwin. DESCRIPTION:Join Mary Campbell\, ELCA AMMPARO Program Director\, for this workshop en Español to learn more! \n“Dios es nuestro amparo y fortaleza\,” (“God is our refuge and strength\,”) – Psalm 46:1 \nAMMPARO is a holistic\, whole church commitment by the ELCA\, as a church in the world\, to accompany children today and in the future. \nThe word “amparo” in Spanish means the protection of a living creature from suffering or damage. The ELCA’s strategy to Accompanying Migrant Minors with Protection\, Advocacy\, Representation and Opportunities (AMMPARO) was envisioned after witnessing the plight of children who are forced to flee their communities because of complex and interrelated reasons\, including chronic violence\, poverty\, environmental displacement and lack of opportunities in El Salvador\, Honduras and Guatemala. Due to our connection to companion churches in the region\, including companion synod relationships\, and existing ministries in the U.S.\, the ELCA is well-positioned to help ensure that these vulnerable children are protected. \nIn a holistic\, whole church response that connects international and US outcomes\, the ELCA has developed this strategy based on the followingcommitments: \n\nUphold and guarantee basic human rights and safety of migrant children and their families;\nAddress the root causes of migration in countries from Central America’s Northern Triangle and Mexico and the treatment of migrants in transit;\nWork toward just and humane policies affecting migrants in and outside the U.S.; and\nEngage as a church body with all of its companions\, affiliates and partners to respond to the migration situation and its causes and to advocate for migrant children and their families.\n\nAs brothers and sisters in Christ\, the ELCA is called to bear witness to the conditions affecting so many communities and to work to find solutions that will acknowledge the humanity in all of God’s children.
