SUMMARY:2021 Tri-Theological Conference
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe 2021 Tri-Theological Conference with Professor Michael DeJonge \nCo-sponsored by the Southwestern Texas Synod\, Gulf Coast Synod\, Northern Texas-Northern Louisiana Synod\, and Briarwood Leadership Center \nThis is an online event. \n  \n\nDietrich Bonhoeffer in conversation with his twin sister\, Sabine \n  \nBonhoeffer\, Struggle\, and Resistance\nMonday\, January 25\, 2–4pm (all times Central) \nThe life of Lutheran pastor and theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906–1945) is often interpreted through his participation in plots to assassinate Adolf Hitler. While his prayer and discernment led him to that point\, his call for direct resistance to unjust actions of the state began much earlier. This session will introduce Bonhoeffer\, his context\, and his increasing calls for resistance\, both within the church and in direct word and action against the state. \n  \nBonhoeffer the Lutheran\nTuesday\, January 26\, 10am–Noon \nBonhoeffer has become a broadly popular figure throughout western Christianity. His stance against Adolf Hitler\, the Third Reich\, and accommodating elements within German Christianity cost him his life. Studies of his life and thought\, however\, have not always taken into account the specificity of his Lutheran commitments. How\, for instance\, does Lutheranism inform Bonhoeffer’s approach to pacifism and violence? What can that teach Lutherans about our tradition today? \n  \nBonhoeffer’s Politics and Our Own\nTuesday\, January 26\, 2–4pm \nBonhoeffer is often referenced when people are seeking faithful responses to political crises. All sides of the US political spectrum have wondered if we are in a “Bonhoeffer moment.” Bonhoeffer’s historical\, political\, and cultural context was quite distinct from the early 21st-Century United States. In what ways can Bonhoeffer’s theological commitments help interpret political realities today? How can those insights inform faithful leadership and proclamation in the midst of current struggles? \n  \nCost: $75 ($50 early-bird special until December 18)\nRegistration closes at 10am Central on January 25\nREGISTER HERE. \nDownload a flyer here to share. \n  \n \nMichael P. DeJonge is Professor and Chair of Religious Studies at the University of South Florida. He researches the history of Christian thought and issues involving religion and politics. \nDeJonge has been a Fulbright Scholar\, a Fellow of the Berlin Program for Advanced German and European Studies\, a Volkswagen/Mellon Fellow at the Leibniz-Institute for European History in Mainz\, Germany\, and Visiting Dietrich Bonhoeffer Professor of Theology and Ethics at Union Theological Seminary in New York. \nHis scholarship has focused on the twentieth-century German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer\, with monographs including Bonhoeffer’s Theological Formation (Oxford\, 2012)\, Bonhoeffer’s Reception of Luther (Oxford\, 2017)\, and Bonhoeffer on Resistance: The Word Against the Wheel (Oxford\, 2018). \n  \n \nEvent Structure \nThe conference organizers intend for this event to be directly relevant to your daily vocation and service in church and society. We are seeking to foster sustained\, engaged conversation in addition to providing important content in Prof. DeJonge’s presentations. \nEach of the conference’s scheduled sessions will include a breakout opportunity. In order to facilitate focused conversation\, our request is that you come to the breakout session with one overarching question and one significant quote from the text assigned for that session. \nFeel free to emphasize your personal responses and commitments as you engage the text. Our conversations will be enriched if you choose quotes that resonate with you and craft questions that are open-ended (questions that can’t be answered with a simple “yes” or “no”). \nLike you\, Bonhoeffer was a Christian leader deeply engaged with and challenged by his context. Your personal reflections on your life of service will carry us forward throughout our time together. \n  \nIntended Audience \nThis gathering is open for all people interested in the overarching topic\, both lay and rostered. Our two-hour sessions will be structured to include a significant presentation from Prof. Michael DeJonge\, ample time for discussion in breakout sessions\, and time for sharing in plenary. Each session will have options for compact but in-depth reading intended to enrich conversation throughout the event. \n  \nRecommended Readings \nMichael P. SUMMARY:AMMPARO Workshop en Español
DESCRIPTION:Join Mary Campbell\, ELCA AMMPARO Program Director\, for this workshop en Español to learn more! \n“Dios es nuestro amparo y fortaleza\,” (“God is our refuge and strength\,”) – Psalm 46:1 \nAMMPARO is a holistic\, whole church commitment by the ELCA\, as a church in the world\, to accompany children today and in the future. \nThe word “amparo” in Spanish means the protection of a living creature from suffering or damage. The ELCA’s strategy to Accompanying Migrant Minors with Protection\, Advocacy\, Representation and Opportunities (AMMPARO) was envisioned after witnessing the plight of children who are forced to flee their communities because of complex and interrelated reasons\, including chronic violence\, poverty\, environmental displacement and lack of opportunities in El Salvador\, Honduras and Guatemala. Due to our connection to companion churches in the region\, including companion synod relationships\, and existing ministries in the U.S.\, the ELCA is well-positioned to help ensure that these vulnerable children are protected. \nIn a holistic\, whole church response that connects international and US outcomes\, the ELCA has developed this strategy based on the followingcommitments: \n\nUphold and guarantee basic human rights and safety of migrant children and their families;\nAddress the root causes of migration in countries from Central America’s Northern Triangle and Mexico and the treatment of migrants in transit;\nWork toward just and humane policies affecting migrants in and outside the U.S.; and\nEngage as a church body with all of its companions\, affiliates and partners to respond to the migration situation and its causes and to advocate for migrant children and their families.\n\nAs brothers and sisters in Christ\, the ELCA is called to bear witness to the conditions affecting so many communities and to work to find solutions that will acknowledge the humanity in all of God’s children. Join us in making a difference in the lives of vulnerable children and families.

SUMMARY:Engaging Anti-Racism for the Wholeness of the Church: 2019 NT-NL Leadership Convocation
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE. \nSummary \nRacism (conscious and unconscious\, explicit and implied) is a deep problem in American society. We are called to stand against racism. But how? This three-day workshop will help you and your congregations build stronger coalitions for affecting change in your communities and more effectively sharing the Good News of God’s love for the entire world. \nSessions \nDay 1 \nOur first day together lays the groundwork for our time together. We will begin by introducing foundational terms and concepts. Together\, we will determine a baseline for conversation while developing relationships of trust. We will look at imbalances of power and privilege so we can better comprehend how implicit bias shapes our interactions with others. \nDay 2 \nWe will use several tools that help facilitate our self-awareness so we can better participate in coalitional justice work. By knowing ourselves and how we are implicated in systems of race\, racism\, classism\, gender discrimination\, sexuality discrimination\, etc.\, we can better partner with others. The day will end with a recommitment to forming community for the sake of justice. \nDay 3 \nOur final session will focus on equipping all training participants with tangible tools to carry on with this work in their own communities. Each of the resources utilized throughout the training will be shared\, with further instruction on how they can be introduced and implemented. The work does not end with the end of this training; it continues in your congregations and communities. \n\nOur speaker will be Taurean Webb! \n \nTaurean J. Webb self-identifies as an activist-scholar\, teacher and former youth pastor\, specializing in “coalition training” for and within faith-based communities. Since 2012\, Webb has trained congregations\, activist groups\, community centers (such as YWCAs) and high schools\, domestically and globally\, on how to organize and build sustainable relationships\, across various categories of difference. Specifically\, in his coalition training work\, Webb offers short-term (1-day\, 3-day\, weeklong)\, longer-term (1-2 month) and custom workshops around issues such as interracial and interfaith coalition-building\, diversity and inclusion\, implicit bias\, white privilege and others subject areas. Though not all of his work is faith-based\, to Webb\, organizing for social change—and expanding the ways that communities are able to think about God—are paramount to the Christian faith commission. In other words\, he has an affinity for engaging the work of justice and social change within communities of faith\, in particular. \nWebb is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Morehouse College (Atlanta\, GA)\, having also completed masters degrees at Columbia University (NY) and Northwestern University (IL)\, respectively. He is currently completing a certificate in Philanthropy and Non-Profit Management at Northwestern University and concluding his PhD dissertation at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary (Evanston\, IL) in the field of Theology and Ethics. \nWebb serves as the Director of the Center for the Church and the Black Experience and Instructor of Religion & Race at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. He lives in Chicago\, Il with his wife and daughter. \n\nTentative schedule: \nMonday \nMorning   Registration \nNoon   Lunch \n1:00pm   Opening Devotion \n1:30pm   Bishop Erik Greeting/Overview \n1:45pm   1st Session (3 hrs) \n4:45pm   Break \n5:00pm   Dinner \n6:00pm   2nd Session (1.5 hrs) \n7:30pm   Worship \n8:15pm   Nightcap with refreshments and snacks \nTuesday \n8:00am   Breakfast \n9:00am   Devotion \n9:15am   3rd Session (2.5 hrs) \n11:45am   Lunch \n2:00pm   4th Session (2.75 hrs) \n4:45pm   Break \n5:00pm   Worship (outside if weather permits) \n6:00pm   Dinner (outside – BBQ/cookout) \n7:00pm   5th Session (1 hr) \n8:15pm   Nightcap with refreshments and snacks \nWednesday \n8:00am   Breakfast \n8:45am   Devotion \n9:15am   6th Session (2.25 hrs) \n11:30am   Closing Prayer \nNoon   Dismissal (no lunch provided) \nThirteen (13) Continuing Education Contact Hours \n\nPricing \nThis is the third year in a row we’ve been able to keep our pricing the same\, even though the value for this training is significantly more than the cost paid by each participant. \nIf staying overnight at Briarwood for the full experience: \nQuail Run ($245 per person\, double occupancy) \nOak Grove ($185 per person\, 8-12 person cabin) \nTrails End ($160 per person\, 18-person cabin) \nIf bringing your spouse to stay with you: \nQuail Run ($180) \nOak Grove ($100) \nTrails End ($100) \nIf commuting: \n3 Days ($150) \nSpouse ($140) \nREGISTER HERE.

DESCRIPTION:New to Briarwood – Honoring Mamma Jean Oswald and Pastor Eric Schulze\n\nFrom Briarwood’s newsletter:\n\n\n\nThis summer we have added a tower that measures 30 feet tall and on this tower are a climbing wall\, vertical playpen\, and “Jacob’s Ladder.”  Off of this tower is a 450 foot zip line that climbers get to ride after they’ve made it to the top!  This addition has proven to not only be a highlight for summer campers but an attraction as we now offer BASE Camp (Briarwood’s Awesome Summer Experience) to the surrounding Community.\n\nThis new addition was made possible because of gifts given in Memory of Mamma Jean and Pastor Eric\, a gift from Pastor Eric’s Estate\, a major gift from Grace Lutheran Church\, Fort Worth\, a grant from the NT-NL Mission Endowment Fund along with gifts from Ron and Becky Brakke and Calvary Lutheran\, Richland Hills.\n\nWe not only give thanks for these gifts to Briarwood but also for the opportunity to honor two pillars of Briarwood’s ministry!  Everyone is invited to join us at Briarwood for a cook-out lunch on Saturday\, September 23\, at 12:30 pm.  A dedication will follow the lunch and everyone is invited to spend the afternoon at Briarwood to enjoy outdoor activities along with the opportunity to climb the wall and ride the zip line!\n\n\n\nPlease RSVP to bw@briarwoodretreat.org by Friday\, September 15.
