DESCRIPTION:The Stalcup School of Theology for the Laity at Brite Divinity School begins a new season with: \nThe Borderlands as a Political and Religious Reality \nThirteenth Jean and Parker Wilson Seminar \nSaturday\, September 7\, 9:00am-1:45pm \nNorthway Christian Church\, Dallas \nExplore the complexity of borderlands and the challenges they present to conventional interpretations of Christianity.  This seminar discusses the historical evolution of the U.S.- Mexico border\, including the original inhabitants\, the making of the Spanish Borderlands\, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo\, and the creation of the political boundary that is now the border. Consideration of the interdependent nature of the two country’s economies lays the foundation for understanding the current economic\, social\, cultural\, and political situation. SUMMARY:Ministerial Flourishing: Exploring the Meaning\, Means and Practices
DESCRIPTION:Feeling tired and disconnected from what called you to ministry? Are you struggling to improve the quality of your daily life? Or are you seeking a time for personal reflection on what comes next? \nBrite Divinity School is pleased to offer Ministerial Flourishing: Exploring the Meaning\, Means and Practices \nThis week-long\, residential workshop in a retreat setting employs a values assessment tool and a close reading of our life stories to lay a foundation for understanding the connection between our values\, our stories\, and the ways they support/inhibit our flourishing. We will learn practices of flourishing\, including re-storying\, practicing love\, self-compassion\, and honoring the body as steps toward creating a sustaining story of life and ministry that moves us toward flourishing. The workshop begins Sunday evening with dinner and ends mid-afternoon on Friday. This workshop is intended to meet boundary training criteria for ministerial standing; however\, it is the participant’s responsibility to verify with their judicatory whether or not this workshop satisfies professional standing requirements. \nA certificate will be given at the end of the workshop for six contact hours of continuing education in boundary training. \nThe workshop will be led by Dr. Timothy Robinson\, Alberta H. and Harold L. DESCRIPTION:Fifteenth Joe A. and Nancy Vaughn Stalcup Lecture on Christian Unity \nLocation: East Dallas Christian Church \nFree and open to the public \nRSVP requested \nJooseop Keum is Distinguished Professor of World Christianity at the Presbyterian University and Theological Seminary (PUTS) in Seoul\, South Korea. Rev. Dr. Keum served the World Council of Churches (WCC) based in Geneva\, Switzerland for ten years as Director of the Commission on World Mission and Evangelism (CWME) and as editor of International Review of Mission\, which is the missiological journal incepted by the World Missionary Conference in Edinburgh 1910. He taught history and issues of ecumenical missiology as research professor at Stellenbosch University in South Africa. Dr. Keum received a PhD at New College\, University of Edinburgh\, and served the Council for World Mission in London as the executive secretary of Mission Programme. Prof. Keum’s main focus of research is ecumenical understanding and practice of mission in the context of world Christianity. His current project is a forthcoming book on A Missiology of Life. He is the main editor of the new WCC mission statement\, Together towards Life: Mission and Evangelism in Changing Landscapes. He organised the 14th World Mission Conference in 2018 with a great success in Arusha\, Tanzania. Debracen Reformed Theological University awarded him an honorary doctorate in reformed theology. Practical Theology & Missiology) at the Faculty of Theology\, University of Stellenbosch\, South Africa. She is also the former Dean and Head of the Department of Community Development at Cornerstone Institute (formerly Cornerstone Christian College). She holds a PhD in Practical Theology (Theology and Development) and has published close to 30 articles and chapters in both local and international journals and books. Nadine’s research has focused on the role of faith communities in addressing issues of social injustice and poverty and her most recent projects have been funded by grants from the National Research Foundation and the Nagel Centre for World Christianity. Besides lecturing\, publishing and supervising post graduate students\, Nadine is often invited to address congregations\, church leaders and Faith Based Organizations on this topic. She sees herself as an activist academic always seeking to push for space for more voices to be heard and also chairs both the Community Engagement and Transformation Committees within the school of Theology. Nadine also serves on the boards of two Non-Governmental Organisations and is the current chairperson of the Practical Theology Society of South Africa. She is married to Andries and they have an 8-year-old daughter\, Daniela.
