SUMMARY:Western States Youth Gathering 2023
DESCRIPTION:The Western States Youth Gathering (WSYG) and Western States Multicultural Youth Leadership Event (WYLE) is back! Coming to California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks\, CA\, July 4-9\, 2023\, the Western States Youth Gathering is open to high school aged youth in Regions 1-4 of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). \nWSYG and WYLE will gather around the theme\, “Revive\, Reunite\, Rejoice”\, grounded in Acts 2:1 “When the day [of WSYG] came\, they were all together in one place.” \nWith nearly 35 years of history\, WSYG is a multi-day youth gathering that gives high schoolers the opportunity to explore their faith\, gather as a community through creative team-building activities and workshops\, and enjoy endless summer fun all under the Southern California sunshine. In 2017\, the WSYG planning team hosted the first ever Western States Multicultural Youth Leadership Event (WYLE). WYLE is a pre-gathering intended for students of color and/or youth groups that makes up at least 20% persons of color\, taking place the few days leading up to WSYG. \nThis year’s event will feature an outdoor festival-style main stage\, interactive and service learning opportunities\, team-building activities with our lutheran outdoor ministries\, creative worship elements\, and exciting nightlife events. \nAfter a cancelled 2020 event due to the COVID-19 pandemic and with a new core leadership team\, this year’s WSYG and WYLE may look a bit different\, but will still center the good news that Christ dwells among us and through us. With synodical sponsorship from the Southwest California Synod and Pacifica Synod\, WSYG and WYLE hopes to bring together over 500 participants from as far east as Minnesota\, down south to the Gulf-Coast\, up north to Alaska\, and out west to the islands of Hawai’i. \nRegistration for WSYG and WYLE opens Monday\, Oct. 3\, 2022\, at $385 per person\, with prices increasing Jan. 4\, 2023. Registration spots can be reserved with an early bird registration deposit of $115 per person. https://www.wsyg.com/

SUMMARY:“God’s work. Our hands." Sunday
DESCRIPTION:Mark your calendar for Sunday\, Sept. 12\, when congregations of the ELCA will come together for “God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday. Our church continues to live through the COVID-19 pandemic. Physical distancing has changed the way we worship and serve. But the need is great\, and God’s church is at work. \nWe’re not sure what the impact of this crisis will look like in September\, but we continue to be church together. We are witnessing the outpouring of love and concern that God’s people have for one another. Our congregations continue to maintain feeding ministries\, serve communities disproportionately affected by COVID-19 infection and assist people who are financially burdened by the economic downturn. \n“Service in the Time of COVID-19” was developed to offer service project ideas and considerations for safely supporting your community in this time of pandemic. \nAs we gather together in service to our neighbors\, we are reminded of one of our most basic convictions as Lutherans: All of life in Jesus Christ — every act of service\, in every daily calling\, in every corner of life — flows freely from a living\, daring confidence in God’s grace. Be sure to save the date and visit ELCA.org/DayofService for updates to our resources. \nYou work every day to make your community a better place. We look forward to working together with you on “God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday.

SUMMARY:Commemoration of the Emanuel Nine
DESCRIPTION:As part of the 2019 ELCA Churchwide Assembly\, voting members adopted a resolution designating June 17 as a commemoration of the martyrdom of the Emanuel 9—the nine people shot and killed on June 17\, 2015\, during a Bible study at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston\, S.C. \nThe resources referenced below are provided to help congregations mark this day. Many of these materials were recently produced for this first year of marking the commemoration; among the others are helpful ELCA websites and documents as well as resources from our ecumenical partners. \nIn this time of pandemic\, many of the resources will need to be adapted for virtual worship\, online conversation\, or individual reflection and devotion. You are invited to use them in whatever ways are most helpful for your local context. \nOur relationship to the shooter\, as well as two of the slain\, reminds us of both our complicity and our calling. Together we confess that we are in bondage to the sins of racism and white supremacy and\, at the same time\, we rejoice in the freedom that is ours in Christ Jesus who “has broken down the dividing wall\, that is\, the hostility between us” (Ephesians 2:14). May God continue to guide us as we seek repentance and renewal\, and racial justice and reconciliation among God’s precious children. \nAn online ELCA Prayer Service for the Commemoration of the Emanuel Nine\, including Bishop Eaton and leaders from around the church\, is being prepared for viewing beginning on June 17\, 2020\, the fifth anniversary of the martyrdom of the Emanuel Nine. \nResources for the Commemoration of the Emanuel Nine can be found at ELCA.org/EmanuelNine. \nThe video prayer service will be available for viewing at any time\, aiming for release by mid-day on June 17\, possibly with a timed “premiere” in conjunction with the CWO worship time\, 11:15 a.m. CDT.

SUMMARY:"God's work. Our hands." Sunday
DESCRIPTION:Dear colleagues in ministry\, \nPlease save the date Sunday\, Sept. 8\, for “God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday. \nOur dedicated day of service provides us with an opportunity to be “church together” as we serve our communities in ways that share God’s love with all of God’s people. \nSince 2013 our congregations have put their faith in action for “God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday. Watch how volunteers from Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Somerville\, N.J.\, used their gifts during their day of service in 2018 and be inspired as you make your plans. \nEarlier this year we announced a hymn contest for “God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday. The chosen hymn will become a year-round worship resource and should reflect on service as one of our most basic convictions as Lutherans. We are pleased to have received a number of original compositions as the March 1 entry deadline approaches. Learn more about details and contest rules. \nSave the date and visit ELCA.org/dayofservice for updates to our resources. And if your congregation cannot participate on Sept. 8\, please consider another time. \nYou work every day to make your community a better place. We look forward to working together on “God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday. \nGod’s peace\, \n\nChristina Jackson-Skelton \nExecutive Director\, Mission Advancement \nEvangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA)

SUMMARY:AMMPARO Workshop en Español
DESCRIPTION:Join Mary Campbell\, ELCA AMMPARO Program Director\, for this workshop en Español to learn more! \n“Dios es nuestro amparo y fortaleza\,” (“God is our refuge and strength\,”) – Psalm 46:1 \nAMMPARO is a holistic\, whole church commitment by the ELCA\, as a church in the world\, to accompany children today and in the future. \nThe word “amparo” in Spanish means the protection of a living creature from suffering or damage. The ELCA’s strategy to Accompanying Migrant Minors with Protection\, Advocacy\, Representation and Opportunities (AMMPARO) was envisioned after witnessing the plight of children who are forced to flee their communities because of complex and interrelated reasons\, including chronic violence\, poverty\, environmental displacement and lack of opportunities in El Salvador\, Honduras and Guatemala. Due to our connection to companion churches in the region\, including companion synod relationships\, and existing ministries in the U.S.\, the ELCA is well-positioned to help ensure that these vulnerable children are protected. \nIn a holistic\, whole church response that connects international and US outcomes\, the ELCA has developed this strategy based on the followingcommitments: \n\nUphold and guarantee basic human rights and safety of migrant children and their families;\nAddress the root causes of migration in countries from Central America’s Northern Triangle and Mexico and the treatment of migrants in transit;\nWork toward just and humane policies affecting migrants in and outside the U.S.; and\nEngage as a church body with all of its companions\, affiliates and partners to respond to the migration situation and its causes and to advocate for migrant children and their families.\n\nAs brothers and sisters in Christ\, the ELCA is called to bear witness to the conditions affecting so many communities and to work to find solutions that will acknowledge the humanity in all of God’s children. Join us in making a difference in the lives of vulnerable children and families.

SUMMARY:National Young Adult Discernment Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Bishop Gronberg has made Youth and Youth Adult Ministry a priority for NT-NL. This is another great opportunity for our young adults to connect with ELCA young adults from across the country. \nWhy Me? Why Now? Why This? – Listening for God in a Noisy World. \nHosted by ELCA Seminaries and ELCA Young Adult Ministries \nNovember 16-18 \nTallapoosa\, GA \nWith so many voices seeking our attention\, how do we learn to listen to the voice of God? \nWhat is our vocation and how is our faith called to be alive in that vocation? \nThe Seminaries of the ELCA and Young Adult Ministries\, along with participants from across the whole ELCA\, will spend time sorting through some of the predominant voices competing for our attention – voices that stake a claim on who we should be\, what we should value\, and what makes us happy. We will spend time thinking about the voice of God which lays claim on our lives\, how that impacts how we spend our time\, and how following God’s call might help us find a sense of purpose\, meaning\, and even joy. \nWho: Young adults (18-30ish) \nHow Much: $50. We know cost of attendance is a huge hurdle for young people\, that’s why we’re committed to paying all travel\, lodging\, and food costs for this event. You will see on the event page that there is a $50 registration fee. This is so that people have a little of their own “buy in”\, but please don’t let this be the reason young people you know don’t join us. Email Savanna.Sullivan@elca.org if the $50 will be a problem for potential participants.

SUMMARY:2018 ELCA Youth Leadership Summit
DESCRIPTION:The ELCA Youth Leadership Summit is an annual gathering for high school youth identified as leaders and adult representatives from each synod from across the ELCA. This summit focuses on leadership development through engaging speakers and thought leaders in key areas at the intersection of leadership and faith in daily life and faith formation and building connections for high school youth in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Youth will be challenged to take home what they have learned to inspire action in their own synods and youth groups. \n2018 ELCA Youth Leadership Summit \nNovember 1-4 \nCamp Carol Joy Holling\, Ashland\, Nebraska \n \nThe theme for the 2018 Summit is “Through Christ We Can” and will use Philippians 2:1-5 as it’s scriptural base. The event will focus on young people’s call to ministry for the sake of others and advocacy because of their faith. For our learning and networking times we will be joined by various ELCA ministries and staff including Advocacy\, Young Adult Ministries\, Justice for Women and Global Mission. \nProgram\, food\, lodging\, and local transportation costs are covered thanks to a grant the ELCA Youth Ministry received. NT-NL will cover travel to and from Nebraska for up to 4 (four) youth. \nRegistration will remain open until September 30. Contact molly.beckdean@elca.org with any questions.

SUMMARY:"God's work. Our hands." Sunday
DESCRIPTION:Many of you are already making plans for “God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday on Sept. 9. New resources are now available to help you organize and prepare. \nYou will find the resources you need to plan your activities and worship\, invite your neighbors and promote within your community. There are videos to watch and share for inspiration. New this year are Spanish-language postcards\, door hangers and social memes. \nYou also can order yellow “God’s work. Our hands.” T-shirts. We realize that many congregations wear their T-shirts throughout the year and do various service projects in addition to the designated day of service. Thank you for bringing Christ’s love to your communities. \nLet us know about your plans for Sept. 9 by answering a couple quick questions in our survey. This will allow us to learn more about your vital congregation and its mission in your community. If your congregation cannot participate on Sept. 9\, please consider another time. Either way\, we look forward to hearing from you. \n“God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday celebrates the work you do every day\, serving communities in ways that share the love of God with all people. We look forward to doing this work together again this year. \nGod’s peace\, \n\nChristina Jackson-Skelton \nExecutive Director\, Mission Advancement \nEvangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) \n \nWith “God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday approaching\, the Life of Faith Initiative offers a new document to expand “God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday from being a single day of service to a way to equip our people for a life of faith so that “every act of service\, in every daily calling\, in every corner of life flows freely from a living\, daring confidence in God’s grace.”

SUMMARY:ELCA Coach Training
DESCRIPTION:Following up on the learning from our experience at NT-NL Leadership Convocation\, we will be hosting an ELCA Coach Training event Monday-Tuesday\, February 26-27\, 8am-5pm both days. This will be an opportunity to learn more about coaching and begin the process (for those who desire) towards coaching certification. The event is limited in size and will be heavily subsidized by the ELCA and DiscipleLife Endowment Funds. The cost per person is only $100 for NT-NL members or $350 for all others. This cost will assist with materials and presenters and invites commitment from participants. (We have tentatively reached our limit of 15 registrants. Please contact jason@ntnl.org to be added to our waiting list.) \n \nWhat is coaching?\nCoaching is a process of coming alongside a person or team to help them discover God’s agenda for their life and ministry\, and then cooperating with the Holy Spirit to see that agenda become a reality. \nWhat is the coaching process?\nCoaching is not about the Coach!!! It is a focused process in which the coachee\, their community\, and their goals are the center of the conversation. The coach is focused not on their needs or goals but on working with the coachee to discern their goals and develop plans and accountability to accomplish those goals. Coaching has been shown to enhance the effectiveness of ministry for both leader and community. Bishop Gronberg desires to partner with other synods around the ELCA to develop understanding about coaching and make this vital tool available to more leaders throughout our church. \nAttend this two-day training event to learn\, apply\, and practice good coaching skills. Upon completion\, you can become a Level I coach in the ELCA. After completing labs\, you can become a Level II coach in the ELCA. \nClick here for the ELCA Coaching Ministry Overview.

SUMMARY:Pray\, Fast\, Act
DESCRIPTION:PRAYER\, FASTING AND ACTION (#PrayFastAct): The next “For Such a Time” day of prayer\, fasting and action with the Episcopal Church is Friday\, July 21. This month\, the presiding bishops of both churches urge action to protect funding for the U.S. International Affairs budget. Our country has a rich history of fighting extreme poverty and responding to humanitarian crises around the world. Although it’s less than 1 percent of the federal budget\, foreign assistance has saved millions of lives and continues to do so today. With more than 20 million people at risk of starvation globally\, and millions more displaced\, the need for foreign assistance is as great as it has ever been. \nAs a church together\, we ask our members of Congress to protect funding for international programs that provide relief and support livelihood for the poorest among us. Visit elca.org/PrayFastAct for resources and to learn how to take action.

SUMMARY:"God's work. Our hands." Sunday
DESCRIPTION:ELCA Day of Service \nOn Sunday\, Sept. 10\, congregations of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) will again join together for “God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday. As we observe the 500th anniversary of the Reformation\, we are reminded of the gospel’s promise that we are freed in Christ to love and serve our neighbors. \nIn “The Freedom of a Christian\,” Martin Luther wrote: “A Christian is lord of all\, completely free of everything; a Christian is a servant\, completely attentive to the needs of all.” \nAs you begin to explore opportunities to participate in “God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday\, I invite you to consider what the Reformation promise means for us today in our neighborhoods and globally as we carry forward our work to reconcile and restore communities in Jesus’ name. \nOnce you begin making plans for the day of service\, we ask that you register your congregation so we can share and tell stories about the good work that we do together. \nPlease visit ELCA.org/dayofservice for helpful resources for your planning including: \n\nThe 2017 version of the toolkit\, with a new section on advocacy-service activities.\nA new worship resource\nBulletin inserts\nPosters\n\nOld Lutheran will once again have T-shirts available for purchase. The bright-yellow shirts provide a wonderful visual impact across the ELCA. The deadline for ordering your congregation’s personalized T-shirts with Old Lutheran is Aug. 15. \nIf it’s not possible for your congregation to participate on Sept. 10\, please consider another day for your service activities. \nWatch how some members shared God’s love with their neighbors during the 2016 day of service. \n“God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday celebrates who we are as the ELCA – one church\, freed in Christ to love and serve our neighbor. This is work you do in your communities every day\, and we look forward to doing this work together again this year.
