SUMMARY:The Tenth Annual Herbener Lecture: Becoming More Human Through Worship
DESCRIPTION:Guest Lecturer:  Rev. Peter W. Marty \nThose who make a practice of committing their lives to worship discover\, over time\, something interesting. When they leave worship they see an “outside world” that is smaller and more paltry than they had thought. Its politics are puny\, its consumerism is hollow\, its care for the weak is peripheral. The very assumptions of what constitutes the “Real World\,” assumptions that typically guide our lives as shoppers\, scientists\, social workers\, and sales associates suddenly become undone once we realize how the grandeur and mystery of God make us more whole than the more cramped outside world. We can do all kinds of things on our own\, quite independently and self-sufficiently\, thank you very much. But what we can never become without worship is fully human. Worship is where we figure out who we get to be in the presence of a God who gives and gives\, and always out of love. \nBegins at 4pm\nDinner by reservation begins at 5:30pm\nSung Evening Prayer begins at 6:30pm \nFREE ADMISSION: Free-will donation will cover dinner \nFor full details and to register: http://www.luthercenter-northtexas.org/

SUMMARY:The Ninth Annual Herbener Lecture: Reading Romans in the Face of Economic Injustice
DESCRIPTION:Lutherans have traditionally read Paul’s Letters (Romans and Galatians) as theological treatises on human justification by grace alone. We are made right with God by grace\, apart from works. This theological outlook\, however\, has material consequences for how we formulate justice-oriented economic systems. How does the idea of works vs. grace play into our contemporary notions of wealth as blessing? What systemic and structural injustices might this theological formulation hide from our view? Through a new reading of Romans in conversation with Lutheran biblical interpretive traditions\, this lecture will engage new possibilities for theologies that address economic injustice in local\, regional\, and global systems. \n \nGuest Lecturer:  Dr. Katherine A. Shaner \nThroughout her teaching\, her ministry\, and her scholarship she examines the intersections of race\, class\, and gender as well as the ethics of contemporary interpretation. She is also an ELCA pastor\, having served congregations in Detroit\, Boston\, and New York City in addition to old-fashioned circuit-riding in New England and North Carolina. Shaner is the author of Enslaved Leadership in Early Christianity (Oxford University Press\, 2018)\, as well as several articles on Paul’s letters. She also writes for Working Preacher. Originally from Nebraska\, she still misses the horizon for the trees. \nFREE ADMISSION: Free-will donation will cover lunch \nPlease register: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/reading-romans-in-the-face-of-economic-injustice-registration-64978935746?ref=ebtn
