SUMMARY:Annual German Church Service at Christ\, Dallas
DESCRIPTION:This church service is being arranged by the Johanniterorden\, the Dallas Goethe Center and the Deutsche Kirche in Dallas and is being hosted by Christ Lutheran Church on Saturday\, December 14th at 4:00pm. This service offers for English and German speakers a chance to experience a traditional church service in German language with traditional Advent songs.  The service will also include a special children’s sermon and it will be followed by a reception afterwards with German cookies\, cake and Stollen! \nThe service will be accompanied by singing performances of children of the German International School of Dallas and the Dallas Frohsinn Singer. The service will be presided by Rev. Ben Dueholm and Rev\, Kurt Maerschel\, Master of Divinity\, MA who will also provide a special welcome for participating children.

DESCRIPTION:Fight the good fight of the faith; take hold of the eternal life\, to which you were called and for which you made the good conFESsion in the presence of many witnesses. – 1 Timothy 6:12 \nFeaturing: \n\nA short worship service with a message from the bishop.\nA photo for each confirmation class taken with the bishop.\nA ministry fair with information and involvement opportunities from synod and ELCA ministries.\nFood\, of course!\n\nThe goals are for confirmation students to: \n\nget to know the bishop and youth from other congregations\,\nlearn about our wider church and how to get involved\,\nworship\, and\nhave fun!\n\nCongregations are invited to register your whole confirmation class\, including teachers and adult advisers. As of January 2\, there are 158 youth and adults registered! \nWe have an exciting opportunity for the offering. Bishop Momoh of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sierra Leone (ELCSL) has requested copies of the small catechism (the pocket size). Although Krio and Mende are the languages most people speak in their daily lives\, English is the official language\, widely spoken\, and used for official business and in schools\, so our copies would be incredibly helpful. Please bring copies of the small catechism that we can collect and then send to Sierra Leone\, or bring money (just $1 per copy) to cover the cost (we’ll have copies on hand for each attendee to put into the offering). On October 31\, 1517\, Martin Luther wrote to Albrecht\, Archbishop of Mainz and Magdeburg\, protesting against the sale of indulgences. He enclosed in his letter a copy of his “Disputation of Martin Luther on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences\,” which came to be known as Ninty-five Theses. Hans Hillerbrand writes that Luther had no intention of confronting the church\, but saw his disputation as a scholarly objection to church practices\, and the tone of the writing is accordingly “searching\, rather than doctrinaire.” Hillerbrand further writes that there is nevertheless an undercurrent of challenge in several of the theses\, particularly in Thesis 86\, which asks: “Why does the pope\, whose wealth today is greater than the wealth of the richest Crassus\, build the basilica of St. Peter with the money of poor believers rather than with his own money?” Luther objected to a saying attributed to Johann Tetzel that “As soon as the coin in the coffer rings\, the soul from purgatory [also attested as ‘into heaven’] springs.” He insisted that\, since forgiveness was God’s alone to grant\, those who claimed that indulgences absolved buyers from all punishments and granted them salvation were in error. Christians\, he said\, must not slacken in following Christ on account of such false assurances. The film Luther is a 2003 biopic about the life of Martin Luther. It begins during a thunderstorm in 1505\, as Luther is returning to his home. For fear of losing his life in the storm\, he commits his life to God and becomes an Augustinian monk… \n\n
