SUMMARY:The 12th Annual Herbener Lecture: Who is My Neighbor?
DESCRIPTION:The 12th Annual Herbener Lecture: Who is My Neighbor?\nGuest Lecturer: Rev. Khader El-Yateem\nA Palestinian-American Lutheran Pastor born in Bethlehem and Executive Director for Service and Justice at the ELCA \nThe question of who my neighbor is very challenging in the context of the Israeli war on Gaza. It challenges the core of our theological understanding of this biblical story and the essence of our faith. How can I love my neighbor when my neighbor is my enemy? How do we move from political polarization to be the peacemakers? Rev. El-Yateem’s presentation will challenge our understanding of our discipleship in the context of war\, migration\, and displacement as we respond to our neighbor’s needs. It is a call to live as liberated people of faith to serve our neighbor freely. \n\n\n\n\nOctober 10\, 2024 – 7:00 pm\nLecture followed by question and answers \nKing of Glory Lutheran Church\n6411 Lyndon B Johnson Fwy\, Dallas\, TX 75240\nFREE ADMISSION: Free-will donations appreciated. Online donations accepted. See link below. \nTo reserve your seat and to find more information click here. \n\nThe NT-NL Synod Office is hosting a luncheon for rostered leaders. Professor of Philosophy and Religion at the University of North Texas\, will be leading our bible study/theological reflection presentations. Dr. Rowe is a well respected theologian of the protestant tradition and particularly the intersection of protestant/Lutheran theology and environmental theology. As we reflect on our synod scripture “The Lord has done great things for us\,” she will challenge us to think about our understandings of God’s creation\, how that intersects with our responsibilities to steward this creation\, and how our theology of free gift might cause us to take creation for granted. She is also married to our UNT Campus Pastor the Rev. Jim Rowe. We are grateful to have Dr. Rowe on our territory and willing to share this time with us. \n\nWe are not offering the option of a Hard Copy of Assembly Reference Materials (previously called the Book of Reports) this year. SUMMARY:Teaching Fish to Walk: Church Systems and Adaptive Challenges
DESCRIPTION:Informative | Interactive | Provocative | Imaginative \nThe Teaching Fish to Walk: Church Systems and Adaptive Challenges workshop will have no elephants in the room. We will explore with participants in an open and provocative way the future of the Christian faith in the context of the great velocity and reach of change in North America. \nWe have no “golden” answers. But we believe that a vital\, realistic yet encouraging and collaborative conversation needs to happen. The church faces many adaptive issues\, not unlike the early church had to contend with such as defining leadership roles and establishing its own lexicon to define words to convey fresh meaning regarding what they believed and who they were. \nAdaptation means making structures or situations more suitable to the environment. Adaptation is evolutionary\, and evolution is always messy. In Germany\, for instance\, arborists have discovered that certain types of trees are beginning to grow “anxiety shoots.” With changes in climate\, trees are adapting with new root systems. Could we do less? \n“We” are two Lutheran pastors (veteran church leaders). The Rev. Dr. Jon Lee is the former Senior Pastor at King of Glory\, Dallas\, and a past president of the Dallas Clergy Association. The Rev. Dr. Pete Steinke is an internationally respected church consultant and author/speaker. Together\, they will offer presentations\, guide group activities\, and learn alongside of others. \nRemember what William Deming said: “Your system is perfectly designed to give you the results you are getting.” We will start from there. \nCost: \nEarly Registration: $40 per person (Sept 28th deadline)\nRegular Registration: $50 (or $45 for two or more from the same congregation) \nCheck payments to be made to New Visions Workshop\, or Pay online

SUMMARY:Dr. Michael W. Waters to discuss "Stakes Is High: Race\, Faith\, and Hope for America"
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Michael W. Waters\, author and founding pastor of Joy Tabernacle A.M.E. Church in Dallas\, will discuss Stakes Is High: Race\, Faith\, and Hope for America. Dr. Waters is a sought-after speaker\, community leader\, and social commentator. He has received numerous awards and was listed among the Dallas Business Journal’s 2015 “40 Under 40.” \nFrom the press release: \n“At times\, the mantle of ministry mandates that you both see and hear difficult things. Prophetic ministry then requires that you speak out concerning what you have witnessed. Always\, the mantle of ministry requires courage.” \nThose words are from the book Stakes Is High: Race\, Faith and Hope for America\, and they are powerful words indeed. The book’s author\, the Rev. Dr. Michael W. Waters\, will bring his message of hope and empowerment in the realm of social justice to King of Glory Lutheran Church’s GUSTO! program at 10 a.m. on Monday\, May 14. \nWaters is an award-winning author\, community leader and social commentator. He is founding pastor of Joy Tabernacle A.M.E. Church and an adjunct professor at Southern Methodist University’s Perkins School of Theology. He is well known in Dallas and across the country for speaking out on current issues such as diversity\, ethical leadership\, race\, religion and even hip hop culture. His words of hope and empowerment have inspired national and international audiences. \nWaters was a Dallas Business Journal 40 Under 40 honoree and received SMU’s Distinguished Alumni Emerging Leader award\, the university’s highest honor\, both in 2015. He holds bachelor’s\, master’s and doctoral degrees from SMU. In 2016 he received the Dallas-Fort Worth Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations’ Community Leader of the Year award. He has been featured in EBONY magazine among America’s emerging leaders and has appeared on national TV and in the press. Recent commentaries have been published in The Dallas Morning News. Waters’ book Stakes Is High contains narratives of racial violence and offers ways people can live out their faith for the cause of social justice. Sojourners magazine\, shortly after the book’s release in 2017\, wrote that “Michael W. Waters…is both blunt and lyrical as he meditates on police violence\, racism\, hip-hop\, and the power of faith.” The book will be available for purchase and author signing following the meeting. \nStakes Is High earned the Wilbur Award at the April 2018 conference of the Religion Communicators Council. Wilbur Awards are given to promote and encourage excellence in the communication of religious faith and positive values through a variety of secular media. Waters first book\, Freestyle: Reflections on Faith\, Family\, Justice\, and Pop Culture\, was published in 2014. In it Waters confronts issues within the urban community such as addiction\, education\, incarceration\, family issues and absentee fathers. His latest book\, For Beautiful Black Boys Who Believe in a Better World\, is soon to be released. \nFor more information: \nExcerpt from Stakes Is High: Race\, Faith\, and Hope for America | In this collection of columns written originally for The Huffington Post\, the Rev. Michael W. Waters offers stories from the front lines and offers ways that he and others can live out their faith for the cause of social justice. \nStakes Is High: An Interview on Race\, Faith\, and Hope with Michael Waters | The Rev. Michael Waters talks about his new book\, Stakes Is High: Race\, Faith\, and Hope for America and what we can do to build a more just world for African Americans and all people. \nGood God Episode #3: Reverend Michael Waters | George Mason and Michael W. Waters of Joy Tabernacle AME Church discuss economic justice\, poverty\, race relations in Dallas and America\, and how we can address it with our faith.
