SUMMARY:(RE)FORMATION: a Film by Shannon Ivey
DESCRIPTION:Location: Studio Theatre at Weston Center \nMust the Christian church include stained glass windows\, a marketing campaign\, or a multi-million dollar media setup to spread the word of God? Do pastors need a brand? Jesus was a homeless Jew\, a political radical\, and a servant to the broken – would his “brand” even survive in 21st Century America? In 1517\, Martin Luther challenged the Roman Catholic Church with a similar set of questions and it led to the Protestant Reformation. 500 years later\, as a group of artists renovate a transition home for discarded youth\, they explore the meaning of church\, holy ground\, and Jesus’ mission of love. Is the Christian Church in need of a new (re)Formation? \nShannon Ivey is a professor of dramatic media at TLU and the founder of Theatre For Change – a San Antonio-based nonprofit committed to linking the stories inherent within theatre\, film\, and new media to the needs and messages of nonprofit organizations. \nThis event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Chapel Service & Public Lecture with Kathleen Norris
DESCRIPTION:Chapel Service at 10 a.m. in the Chapel of the Abiding Presence \nPublic Lecture at 7:30 p.m. in Jackson Auditorium \nKathleen Norris is an award-winning poet and a New York Times-bestselling memoirist on matters of Christian spirituality. Her many books include “The Cloister Walk\,” “Acedia & Me: A Marriage Monks\, and a Writer’s Life\,” “Dakota: A Spiritual Geography\,” “Amazing Grace: A Vocabulary of Faith\,” and “The Virgin of Bennington”. After spending two decades of her adult life away from the Christianity of her childhood\, Norris joined a Presbyterian congregation and began exploring ancient spiritual practices of silence and contemplation in association with Roman Catholic monks. Open to doubt and welcoming beauty\, her writing brims with insight about the challenges of the spiritual life today. \nThis is a part of TLU’s year-long series of events recognizing 500 Years of Reformation.

SUMMARY:Chapel Service & Public Lecture with Rev. Bradley Schmeling
DESCRIPTION:Chapel Service at 10 a.m. in the Chapel of the Abiding Presence \nPublic Lecture at 7:30 p.m. in the Chapel of the Abiding Presence \nRev Bradley Schmeling is an ELCA pastor who was called to the work of reformation simply for living honestly and with integrity. While he was serving as pastor of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Atlanta in 2006\, he announced that he had entered a committed relationship with another Lutheran pastor\, Rev. Darin Easler. Until then\, he had been single and therefore not in violation of the ELCA’s policy at the time\, which prohibited “practicing” LGBT clergy. The Southeastern Synod brought formal disciplinary charges against him\, and he was removed from the ELCA clergy roster in 2007. Nonetheless\, Schmeling continued to serve St. John’s and to advocate for reform. In 2009\, the ELCA’s Churchwide Assembly voted to change its policy to enable partnered lesbian and gay clergy to serve congregations that call them. Schmeling was reinstated to the clergy roster in 2010. Today\, he and Easler are married\, and Schmeling serves Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in St. Paul\, Minn.—the largest ELCA congregation in St. Paul\, as well as the largest in the country to be led by an openly gay pastor. He continues to be concerned that the work of reformation is not finished\, particularly in matters of gender\, race\, and culture. \nThis is a part of TLU’s year-long series of events recognizing 500 Years of Reformation.
