Sunday June 4th in NT-NL Synod, ELCA we had a festive ordination liturgy at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Irving. The Rev. Francisco (Frank) Salvador was ordained and installed to serve this congregation. It was a day years in the making as Holy Trinity has been discerning and living into its mission as a bi-lingual (English and Spanish) congregation.
Eight years ago leaders at Santa Maria-Irving were trying to take that congregation out of the ELCA. They did so despite there being a faithful remnant of Santa Maria members who wished to remain in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. In so doing they violated the constitution. However, they physically occupied the property and would not allow those loyal to worship there.
So this group, led by Pastor Gus Vinajeras, sought sanctuary at Holy Trinity. And as I began the service I asked those who had been in leadership at Holy Trinity at the time to stand and be recognized. It would have been easy for this small anglo congregation to be fearful of welcoming the larger group from Santa Maria. To share their facilities and ultimately to become one congregation. But they said “Yes” that day to the opportunity the Holy Spirit presented and because of that yes today Holy Trinity has a hopeful future.
When I arrived one of the anglo leaders of Holy Trinity greeted me and said “Bishop, this is a good day. If we had not had this opportunity I fear you would be here for a closing service and I would have been handing you the keys to the building.” Instead, there is life and new energy as the community now more fully reflects the diversity of the neighborhood in which they are planted. Led by Pastor Salvador who also happened to be celebrating his birthday that day.
There are still challenges ahead for Holy Trinity as there are for all our congregations. But because of their faithfulness and courage to open their doors and hearts. To practice learning leadership, learning what it means to be a pentecost church, there is great opportunity before them. Thanks be to God. #NTNL #InMissionTogether #htlcirving
