Every Thursday evening around 5:30, Campus Pastor Jim Rowe sets up this old grill, a portable table, and all the fixins’ for feeding whatever students stop by on their way past the Wesley Center at UNT. Some of the campus ministry student participants come to help as they can around their own class schedules too. But he largely relies on volunteer help and donations to make this happen regularly. Last week, members of Faith Lutheran in Flower Mound came armed with chili to feed fifty. Last night, it was me just showing up to help serve the burgers grilled by Pr. Rowe.
This is a great way for congregations or individuals to get involved in campus ministry in an easy non-threatening way. Plus it’s fun and you get fed too (if it isn’t all eaten up by the 40-50 students who pass by). It’s a great opportunity for outreach and visibility by our campus ministry. Wanna help? Let me know or contact Pr. Rowe. Showing up to help serve may not work for everyone but donations can help fund the weekly feast (around $50-100 each week depending on whether there are good sales). If you are feeling really generous, that old grill needs to go. Only half of the burners work so it takes way longer to cook the burgers than it should. A new one would be an awesome gift!
But seriously, this was a great way to spend a couple of hour on a Thursday night!
