NT-NL News: July 2019, Fifth Monday

July 29, 2019 | NT–NL News By Jason O'Neill

As Long As Supplies Last

Rick Steves will be a keynote speaker during the Perkins Fall Convocation, November 11-12. Steves, along with being a travel writer and host, is an active ELCA lay person. He will be giving three presentations, participating in a panel with the other two keynote speakers — Samira Izadi Page and Celestin Musekura — and closing out the conference with an extemporaneous session, Rick Steves Unscripted.

Here’s the link for information and registration: https://www.smu.edu/Perkins/PublicPrograms/Perkins-Fall-Convocation/FallConvo2019_Mission.

As an incentive for your full conference registration, you will receive a free DVD by Steves on Luther and the Reformation…as long as supplies last. Just email popelevison@mail.smu.edu your email address once you have completed the full conference registration. There is also a $25 discount for each person from the same church who registers at the same time.

For those who are not able to register for the full conference, there’s a Monday night only option for $15 per ticket to hear Steves present on the topic, “Travel as a Spiritual Act.”

Summer Shape-Up Challenge

Portico has put together a 4-week challenge, starting TODAY, and is inviting everyone to consider participating:

Cultivating a habit of regular physical activity is about more than just your physical health. Through this 4-week challenge, we invite you to track your daily activity — whether manually or by syncing a device — and take the time to invest in your spiritual and emotional well-being along the way. Plus, if you are an ELCA primary health plan member, you can earn wellness dollars toward your HSA or personal wellness account. Everyone can participate!

Questions? Check out the challenge overview guide.

Joining is easy! If you’re eligible for 2019 Live Well, follow the directions below. Don’t have Access to 2019 Live Well? That’s okay! Portico has created a calendar that can be printed and given to each participant. Anyone that has access to 2019 Live Well can manually track your progress for you on their track system. Print out the calendar and start using it today!

Navigate to 2019 Live Well and click on Join the Challenge in the new tile for the Summer Shape-Up.

Featured Resources for July

In a holistic, whole church commitment by the ELCA, as a church in the world, AMMPARO (Accompanying Migrant Minors with Protection, Advocacy, Representation and Opportunities) was envisioned to accompany children today and in the future who are forced to flee their communities because of complex and interrelated reasons, including chronic violence, poverty, environmental displacement and lack of opportunities.

The ELCA’s 1995 social statement, For Peace in God’s World, states:

Care for the Uprooted. Tens of millions are refugees in foreign lands. At least as many are internally displaced. In unprecedented numbers people have had to flee their homes because of persecution or general violence. We support compassionate survival assistance for refugees and vigorous international protection for them. The world community has a responsibility to aid nations that receive refugees and to help change the situations from which they have fled. In our own country, we support a generous policy of welcome for refugees and immigrants. We pledge to continue our church’s historic leadership in caring for refugees and immigrants.

Because we understand each person to be made in God’s image – without distinction based on race, ethnicity, gender, economic class or country of origin – and have heard God’s call to serve the needs of our neighbor wherever they may be, we recognize ourselves to be in mission and ministry together for the benefit of all God’s people. (See also Freed in Christ: Race, Ethnicity and Culture, 1993).
