Back in the day, I was a youth pastor. That’s the reason I went into ministry in the first place – to do youth ministry. Eventually, my horizons broadened in ministry, and that became less and less a part of my call. But I do still enjoy it when I’m able to make it to the youth leaders’ monthly lunch meetings. Maybe because it takes me back to my own younger days. Maybe because it makes me feel like one of the cool kids again (at least a little bit.) But I think it’s mostly because it reminds me to be hopeful about the future of the church.
After today’s meeting, I spent some time talking with one youth leader about ministry. I then spent time with Janelle & Christian talking about the plans for the upcoming National Youth Gathering, and the work they’re doing as our synod reps. In the midst of all of the conversation, I kept hearing the passion and commitment for our kids – for relationships, for discipleship, for service, for leadership. We have some fabulous youth leaders around here, and that just makes me feel so hopeful for our youth AND for our church. So I sure am glad they let me hang out with them once in a while, even though I’m not a cool kid anymore!
