August 13, 2022 brought a historic first to NT-NL Synod, ELCA. Our first ordination of a Deacon (roster of Word and Service) since the rite was officially changed to ordination in 2019.
Deacon jj Godwin was raised up by Calvary-Richland Hills and served an internship at Gloria Dei-Garland where they were ordained. Deacon Godwin has been called to serve on the staff of the Sierra Pacific Synod under the leadership of Interim Bishop Clair Burkat.
We were grateful that newly elected Sierra Pacific synod Vice President Mr. Simon Wong took time to attend the ordination and present the letter of call. I enjoyed getting to VP Wong and comparing notes as he is also a preacher’s kid. His father attended Luther Seminary in Hong Kong before serving as a bi-vocational minister in that community.
Pastor Tom Schwolert of Gloria Dei, who was jj’s internship supervisor, preached. Additionally members of the Deaconess community of the ELCA Deaconess community attended to present the Deacon’s pin and basin and towel as symbols of the call to service. The Rev. Megan Rohrer, former bishop of Sierra Pacific and a mentor to Deacon Godwin, also attended.
I was also pleased to present jj with a deacon stole crafted by our 50/40/10 anniversary celebration team. A good day for all and a blessed ending to one journey and the beginning of a new one. Please remember Deacon Godwin and their family in prayer this weekend. #NTNL #InMissionTogether
