Tuesday morning December 15th I was able to pay a “window” visit with the Rev. Doris Dupree-Harris (St. John, Oak Cliff, Dallas). Pastor Doris, as we mostly know her, has been struggling with health problems all fall and has been in and out of hospital, home, and rehab facilities. During Covid-19, as all our pastors know, visitation has changed and is much more challenging than in the past. But we find ways to connect and today that was through a window at her facility and on the phone. We had a good visit and discussed many things including her health and progress. She is weak, having good days and less good days, but her spirits remain positive. We finished our visit with prayer and together prayed the Lord’s Prayer. It was so good to hear her voice and see her even through a window.
Doris expressed her profound thanks for the cards and other outreaches of support for her in this time. Her son Desmond has taken on the task of caregiver and managing the challenges of our healthcare system. I asked her if there was anything she would like or need and she expressed a desire for audio books particularly by black authors. To help her download more books I will be sending a gift from the NT-NL Bishop benevolence fund to assist Desmond in acquiring these for her.
As of today cards may be sent to Doris at Duncanville Health and Rehab Center 419 S Cockrell Hill Rd, Duncanville, TX 75116 (which just happens to be right next to New Life in Christ Lutheran, Duncanville).
