NT-NL Mission Area continues to increase its giving toward the ELCA’s Malaria Initiative. As of February 1, 2014, our contribution totals $115,000 (of $160,000 pledged for the four-year campaign)—THANK YOU!
Every year, millions of people across the globe commemorate World Malaria Day on April 25. This year, the ELCA is encouraging all congregations to set aside April 27 as World Malaria Sunday.
On World Malaria Sunday, we honor those who have died, pray for those who suffer, and support those who work to end malaria.
Your gifts during World Malaria Week will be matched for extra impact up to $100,000! This includes our Mission Assembly offerings (which will be split between DLA! and Malaria), so please send donations with your voting members!
The ELCA Malaria Campaign has developed a World Malaria Day Action Kit, which will make planning easy. Download those resources here!
Most people remember to change the batteries in their smoke detectors annually and get annual check ups at their doctor, but not many of us have an annual review of our estate plan for updates as needs and wishes change—or perhaps do not have an existing plan in place!

Disciple Project
Give yourself and youth a gift by sharing time at Texas Lutheran University at the only intentional cross-generational leadership school in our church. The Disciple Project is a learning community where we stretch our imagination and increase our capacity as leaders. This is time away from our busy lives to learn practices and skills for following Jesus in a changing time. People in 8th grade through adults are encouraged to be part of this special experience! This event is offered by LEAD, a ministry of the Texas-Lousiana Gulf Coast Synod. Information flyer TLU Health Form
The Lutheran Seminary Program in the Southwest (LSPS) will offer a Spanish Language and Hispanic Ministry Intensive on its campus in Austin, Texas on May 25-30, 2014.
The Spanish Language and Hispanic Ministry Intensive is a resource for Lutherans and those of other denominations who recognize the growing need for competency in the Spanish language and an understanding of Hispanic culture in light of the increasing Hispanic population in this country and in the church. The course focuses on study of the Spanish language and Hispanic culture. Click here for registration information.
Justo González to receive LSTC Confessor of Christ Award
On Sunday, May 18, the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago will present the Rev. Dr. Justo González with the Confessor of Christ Award. Dr. González is a one of the most respected Latino scholars in the United States and a contributor to the development of a Latina/o theology. The award will be presented during the school’s 154th commencement service at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 5472 South Kimbark Avenue, Chicago.
After becoming the youngest person to earn a Ph.D. in historical theology at Yale, Justo González taught at the Evangelical Seminary of Puerto Rico, and later at the Candler School of Theology at Emory University. He is the author of more than 100 books, including the popular History of Christian Thought and The Story of Christianity.
González is an ordained Methodist minister, an educator, and a developer of leaders. He is a founding member of the Association of Theological Education for Hispanics (AETH), which promotes theological education among Hispanic Americans. It established the Justo González Center, which provides a forum for addressing theological topics related to Latino/a ministry and communities. He also helped found the Hispanic Summer Program, the Hispanic Theological Initiative, and Apuntes, the first academic journal of Latina/o theology.
The Confessor of Christ Award
The Confessor of Christ Award originated at Christ Seminary-Seminex, a predecessor school of LSTC. When the Seminex faculty joined LSTC, the award transferred to this seminary. The Confessor of Christ award is given to “a Christian individual whose commitment to Christ Jesus and the Gospel manifests itself through extraordinary personal sacrifice for the sake of Jesus Christ and the Gospel or exemplary witness to Christ Jesus and the Gospel by selfless service to others.”
