The last two weeks have been a historic season for us across the territory of NT-NL Synod, ELCA. For the first time ever a single weather disaster impacted every community across our territory in all four states we serve. Multiple congregations have suffered damage as have individuals homes.
Briarwood Leadership Center’s facilities also sustained damage. On Monday Feb 22nd Director Robert Smith, the onsite Briarwood staff, and myself surveyed the damage with the insurance adjuster. When the power failed the heaters in the attic of the Christ Leadership Center turned off. This caused some damage to the sprinkler system and water leakage.

Thankfully, due to the quick action of the onsite staff the damage was limited. The insurance adjuster remarked on how well that building was designed and insulated. Had that not been the case he stated the damage to the Leadership Center building could have been catastrophic. So that is good news and repairs are underway.
The older Quail Run rooms did sustain damage as well due to older pipes and lack of insulation in those 40+ year old buildings. A few other issues also occurred in some of the other onsite housing but mainly with exposed exterior pipes.
I give great thanks to Carlos and Gunnar for their onsite work and the leadership of Robert Smith. I also give thanks for those who designed and built the Leadership Center building for doing so well and in ways that prevented in this historic storm greater damage.
Along with Briarwood other congregations did sustain damage. I encourage you to consider a gift to our synod disaster fund so that we can support communities and individuals with repairs and also deductibles.
