Message from Bishop Gronberg
In this final video in preparation for our 2020 online synod assembly, I reflect on the 10 of the 50-40-10 anniversaries we are commemorating. In 2009, the ELCA Churchwide Assembly voted to remove the prohibition on pastors who are Gay or Lesbian and in a committed publicly accountable relationship from serving on the roster of the ELCA. These pastors have brought tremendous gifts to our church, including serving in the conference of bishops. However, there are still significant barriers to their service, even in congregations that have stated a claim to being open and welcoming.
Our polity allows for congregations to choose the pastor they desire to serve them, and the 2009 decision made that explicit. It is my prayer as bishop that we will continue to study, learn, and grow in our understanding of how God calls people to serve and grow in our willingness to be open to the gifts of all the people God calls. As we celebrate these anniversaries of the church crossing over barriers to inclusion, it is vital we continue to listen to how the Holy Spirit is working in and through God’s people. I look forward to seeing you on Saturday for assembly. For those not registered as voting members, you can observe the assembly as a visitor via the live stream on our NT-NL facebook page.

Addiction & Race: Generations of Trauma
A one-hour free webinar on Thursday, September 24, at 12:00 pm Eastern Time
Addiction and drug policy in America are inextricably linked to race. In this seminar, we’ll dive into the dynamics of racial injustice, trauma, and oppression that contribute to addiction rates. We’ll also look at the ongoing racial disparities in policing and incarceration that perpetuate inequality and fail to address the root causes of addiction and the potential negative consequences of drug use.
If you are working to lead your congregation or community through issues of racial justice, this webinar will be a valuable resource.

Uncertain Times | Tiempos Inciertos
In her September column for Living Lutheran, ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton reflects on the uncertain times that we find ourselves in during the pandemic. But she believes we are on the brink of a “new thing that God is bringing about.” Are we ready to answer God’s call? Featured Resources for September
Nearly 3,000 people on average commit suicide daily, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). For every person who completes a suicide, 20 or more may attempt to end their lives. About one million people die by suicide each year. There is strong evidence indicating that adequate prevention can reduce suicide rates.
September is National Suicide Prevention (Awareness) Month.
National Suicide Prevention Week is the Monday through Sunday surrounding World Suicide Prevention Day, this year September 6-12.
World Suicide Prevention Day, which first started in 2003, is annually held on September 10 as an International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) initiative.
From the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI): While suicide prevention is important to address year-round, Suicide Prevention Awareness Month provides a dedicated time to come together with collective passion and strength around a difficult topic. The truth is, we can all benefit from honest conversations about mental health conditions and suicide, because just one conversation can change a life. Use #SuicidePrevention or #StigmaFree on social media.
#BeThe1To is the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline’s message for National Suicide Prevention Month and beyond, which helps spread the word about actions we can all take to prevent suicide. The Lifeline network and its partners are working to change the conversation from suicide to suicide prevention, to actions that can promote healing, help and give hope.
The Jason Foundation has a set of resources around the theme of #IWONTBESILENT.

Workshop on Creation’s Gift of Material Goods
The Living Connected project presents creation care as a spiritual discipline, formed by using the gifts of creation in just and loving ways. The NT-NL Public Witness Team for Peace and Justice is offering Living Connected: Material Goods online twice in October.
The workshop presenter is Katrina Martich, a Lutheran deaconess and environmental engineer. She currently serves as a green shepherd for Lutherans Restoring Creation and on the ELCA Sustainability Table.
Saturday, October 24, 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM CDT
Tuesday, October 27, 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM CDT
Register at katrinamartich.com to receive the Zoom link.
Material goods we use daily connect us to others and all creation through the world’s economy and ecology. The workshop will look at ways our choices make a difference in the world and can be an expression of our faith. It offers ideas and resources for spiritual practices in our use of material goods. Over time, these practices build upon each other and become the spiritual discipline of creation care.
The workshops are offered at a reduced cost thanks to a grant from the NT-NL Synod Mission Endowment Fund. For more information, or to discuss ways your congregation can transform its use of creation’s gifts, send an email to Deaconess Katrina Martich at contact@katrinamartich.com.
