Message from Bishop Gronberg
Dear Partners in Mission:
The first weekend of October was rainy across much of our territory. Rain we have prayed for, God’s abundance on display watering the earth to bring forth abundance. We give thanks for the rain, while also recognizing that in some places it comes in amounts that cause damage and harm. A reminder that we are not the masters of our environment, although we have made decisions that impact it.
The weekend also brought opportunities to see the variety of our synod and activities. In Lubbock our Panhandle Conference met with our DEM Pastora Irma Banales to worship, share fellowship, and be together in mission. We have 12 congregations across the Panhandle conference. While they are #milesandmiles from one another, they value their time together deeply and make it a point to gather. Thankful for Pastora Irma and Conference Dean Arlen Lloyd (Oslo-Gruver) for their leadership.

On Saturday we also gathered at King of Glory-Dallas to celebrate 30 years of the NT-NL Mission Endowment Fund. We heard about how this gift to us as synod has grown from $1,000 donations made by people in faith, encouraged by former Bishop the late Mark Herbener, has grown to over $2 Million in assets and has given away more than $1 Million in grants (averaging now $90,000 a year). Jennifer Hachmeister, Director of the MEF, and her team did a wonderful job coordinating this momentous occasion. Part of the occasion was a silent action with baskets donated by folks across the synod. I was proud that my basket “An Office Menagerie” fetched $175, mostly due to the inclusion of a “No” button. Saying No being part of good leadership at times.
Sunday was the 800th anniversary of the death of St. Francis of Assisi. Known for his love of creation. Out at Messiah-Weatherford Boomer the dog was outfitted in his regalia for the occasion. Good tongue in cheek fun for the day and glad Boomer can wear a mitre so I do not have to.
Sunday I was with Central-Dallas in their beautiful sanctuary. Made all the more striking by the rain and green grass and trees outside. Central is making faithful and hard decisions about how best to steward this large facility as the congregation is no longer of size to manage the maintenance. While there is still work to be done they have engaged another congregation about how to work together to ensure the site continues to be a house of worship while allowing Central to continue to worship and be community for one another. These are conversations we are having across our synod. They are challenging but necessary as we look to be faithful and good stewards of that we have received.
October is a busy. My prayers to you and yours as you engage this time and change of season. We are…
#juntosenmision,
Bishop Gronberg

If you are a sponsoring organization it’s time to consider which health benefit option your organization will offer for 2027. EmployerLink Annual Enrolment opens October 1-14. Sponsored member Annual Enrollment begins October 19th.
By offering Portico’s bundled health, retirement, disability, and life insurance benefits, you help support the body, mind, and spirit of the ELCA’s rostered ministers and church staff.
Portico recognizes this year’s cost increases may require difficult decisions for many organizations. Please use their resources to help. Thank you for the important role you play in caring for those who serve.
5 Ways to Help Your Organization:
- Share the Decision Guide and Benefit Cost Estimator on the EmployerLink Annual Enrollment Center with other decision-makers in your organization.
- Talk with your sponsored members about which ELCA-Primary health benefit design best meets their needs: Copay or high-deductible health plan (HDHP). The four health benefit options are:
Select Copay
Select HDHP
Value Copay
Value HDHP - Decide on the ELCA-Primary health benefit option and any health savings account (HSA) contributions your organization will provide. The employer HSA contributions will be received by sponsored members who elect a HDHP option.
Why make an employer HSA contribution? While optional, employer HSA contributions can help sponsored members manage their out-of-pocket costs and build savings for future health care expenses.
If your sponsored members are waiving ELCA health benefits or are on Medicare:
You still must make an ELCA-Primary health benefit election during Annual Enrollment. The health benefit you choose applies to:
ELCA-Primary-eligible family members of those you sponsor
Employees who enroll in health coverage mid-year
Any eligible new employees called or hired in 2027 - Mark your calendar to enter your election online Oct. 1 – 14.*
- Encourage your sponsored members to explore their 2027 benefit options. Their Annual Enrollment period begins Oct. 19.**
It is expected that rostered ministers in the ELCA undergo racial justice, gender justice, and clergy ethics trainings every three years. In partnership with the AR-OK, SWT, and TLGC synods, NT-NL last year we began the three-year cycle starting with Racial Justice training. This year we are offering Gender Justice, and Clergy Ethics will be in 2027.
We will gather with our partner synods via zoom on Thursday November 12 from 9am-noon. You can expect presentations from the Rev. Lisa Heffernan, Coordinator of ELCA Disability Ministries, Dr. Mary Streufert, Executive of Theological Discernment and Director of ELCA Gender Justice and Women’s Empowerment, and Aubrey Thonvold, Executive Director of Reconciling Works. In addition, small group discussion, and some pre-work preparing before we meet.
Mission Endowment Fund Grant Application Window Now Open
The North Texas Northern Louisiana Synod (NTNL) of the ELCA’s Mission Endowment Fund is pleased to announce that the application window for its 2026 Grant Awards will open October 1 and remain open through October 31, 2026.
The Mission Endowment Fund (MEF) exists for the Synod and for God’s work, providing financial support for creative and meaningful ministries throughout the NTNL Synod.
A Simpler Way to Apply
This year, the MEF is offering a downloadable grant application packet that includes both the grant guidelines and application.
The downloadable format allows applicants to:
- Download the complete application packet.
- Review the guidelines at their convenience.
- Work on the application offline.
- Save work as they develop their ministry proposal.
- Upload the completed application when they are ready to submit.
We hope this format provides greater flexibility and makes the application process easier for congregations and ministries.
Have Questions? We’re Here to Help.
The MEF recognizes that every ministry is unique, and we want applicants to feel comfortable asking questions or seeking clarification before submitting an application.
Questions and other inquiries may be submitted to mef@ntnl.org. Please include your question(s), along with your name, congregation or ministry, and additional contact information. A member of the Mission Endowment Fund Grants Committee will review the inquiry and contact you with the appropriate response.
Don’t let a question keep you from applying! If you have an idea for ministry and aren’t sure whether it fits the grant guidelines, reach out. We welcome the opportunity to help you better understand the application process.
Applications Open October 1
Congregations and ministries throughout the NTNL Synod are encouraged to begin thinking about the ways a Mission Endowment Fund grant could help turn a ministry vision into action.
Whether your ministry is building upon an existing program, responding to a new community need, or taking a bold new step in ministry, we invite you to explore the 2026 grant opportunity.
Application Window: October 1–31, 2026
Questions: mef@ntnl.org
The Mission Endowment Fund looks forward to hearing about the ways God is working through the people and ministries of the NT-NL Synod.

Drawing Water: Leadership Reflections from Pastor Nathan Swenson-Reinhold
Drawing Water is a short monthly reflection for congregational leaders across the Northern Texas–Northern Louisiana Synod. These reflections attend to the lived realities of leadership—clarity, fatigue, conflict, discernment, and resilience. Like windmills on the plains that quietly draw life from below the surface, this series invites leaders to slow down, reflect, and remember that leadership was never meant to be carried alone.
October’s article is “Always Reforming, Still Faithful”. You can read the reflections in English and Spanish here.
