Immigration “Know Your Rights” Seminar
August 9, 6:30-8:30pm
Advent, Arlington
Immigration attorney Patricia Freshwater and colleague(s) of the firm Schwamkrug, Freshwater and Lopez, PLLC, will offer an immigration “Know Your Rights” seminar. The attorney(s) will respond to general questions during the “Know Your Rights” presentation. They will also offer an opportunity to consult briefly about specific situations with participants following the presentation.
The “Know Your Rights” presentation and the brief initial consultation with an attorney are offered free of charge and without obligation. Participants deciding that they want legal services are free to choose any law firm that they like. The attorney(s) conducting this seminar will discuss potential fees following the initial consultation with anyone who might be interested in their services.
For Such A Time
This month’s day of fasting and action is Monday, August 21. In August, we focus on programs that provide relief from the effects of environmental degradation on the livelihoods of the poorest among us. As Lutherans, we are called to “seek sufficient, sustainable livelihood for all” and to ensure that all of God’s children are cared for, no matter where they live.
The U.N. Environment Programme (UNEP) “Healthy Environment, Healthy People” 2016 report showed that “in 2012, an estimated 12.6 million deaths globally were attributable to the environment. The air we breathe, the food we eat, the water we drink, and the ecosystems that sustain us are estimated to be responsible for 23 per cent of all deaths worldwide.”

AUGUST RECESS ACTION: Lawmakers have departed Washington, D.C., and returned to their home districts for the August recess. This is a great time to meet with your members of Congress face-to-face, ask questions, and engage on critical issues happening at the national level. Read more about how you can plan for advocacy this summer at the ELCA Advocacy Resource Center.

Featured Resources for August
A reminder that the ELCA has legal resources available on its website at http://elca.org/en/Resources/Legal. The resources include information on some of the most common legal issues faced by congregations, such as employees and volunteers, tax, misconduct, property, and financial issues. While not a substitute for legal advice, these resources can help point you in the right direction.
